2002 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2002 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Review
Two midyear special-edition sedans bring down the curtain on this generation of Mercedes' midsize line. The E-Class will be redesigned for 2003 and closes out its current run as V6 E320 sedan and wagon, the V8 E430 sedan, and the high-performance V8 E55 AMG sedan. Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive is optional for the E430 and E320s in place of rear-wheel drive. The wagon seats seven via a rear-facing 3rd-row seat. All models have a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift feature, traction control/antiskid system, curtain side airbags, front/rear side airbags, and Mercedes' TeleAid assistance system. A rear-obstacle-warning system is optional. A Sport Package option for E320/430 sedans includes larger wheels and tires and "aero" lower-body styling. All models offer optional voice-activated cell phone and a satellite-navigation system that includes an Internet-based "InfoServices" feature that displays user-selected information on the dashboard screen. At no additional cost, the E320 Special Edition sedan comes with new 17-inch alloy wheels, black birdseye maple interior trim, and other amenities Mercedes says are worth $3000. To this, the E430 Special Edition adds Xenon headlamps and headlamp washers, a $3500 value at no extra charge, says Mercedes.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range and obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $44,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. The refined Lexus LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at just under $55,000. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
The smaller but newer C-Class became Mercedes' most popular U.S. line in 2001, former champ E-Class slipping 10.1 percent in year-to-year sales through the third quarter. A worsening economy was an undoubted factor, but Mercedes' midranger has actually been doing quite well for what is now one of the older designs in its class.

But never mind that. All-new E-Class is due for 2003, kicking off with sedan models in fall 2002. Redesigned wagons, an all-wheel-drive option, and performance models follow later, introduction dates to be determined.

The new E-Class strides a longer wheelbase for more passenger room within little changed overall length. Styling is modernized as a scaled-down version of Mercedes' big S-Class. Current powertrains will carry over at first, but repositioned engines will lower vehicle center of gravity, which ought to improve cornering ability. That also allows for a more steeply raked hoodline that should work with other styling elements to reduce air drag and thus wind noise. Due to be phased in later are a new family of engines with direct fuel injection, which squirts gas right into the cylinders instead of feeding it from a tubular rail. The main benefit claimed is more efficient combustion that improves economy and reduces emissions. Five-speed automatic wil remain the only transmission, but a 6-speed is being developed to replace it somewhere down the road.

Other details and final pricing are still some ways off, but there should be two new features borrowed from the redesigned 2003 SL luxury 2-seater. These are front knee airbags, which up the inflatable restraint count to a record 12, and Mercedes' new "brake-by-wire" system, which modulates pressure to each wheel by computer, thus eliminating a mechanical pedal linkage. Mercedes' anti-lean Active Body Control suspension should be standard or available depending on model.

The new E-Class is said to be the basis for Mercedes' first "crossover," a high-body AWD wagon boasting an air-spring suspension with variable ride height a la Audi Allroad. It's being planned in 5-passenger and long-wheelbase 7-passenger versions, the latter with fold-flat 3rd-row seats. As yet unnamed, this vehicle will reportedly be built at Mercedes' Alabama plant alongside the redesigned 2005-model M-Class SUV, which also gets unibody construction. The crossover may also arrive for 2005, maybe a bit earlier, and should be priced at the high end of the spectrum. Engines are said to comprise a direct-injection V6 and V8 with four valves per cylinder. The above-mentioned 6-speed automatic is likely to be the sole transmission.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

E320 sdn E320 wgn E430 sdn E55 AMG Class Average
6 6 7 8 6.2

Mercedes claims 0-60 mph at 7.1 sec for the rear-drive E320 sedan and 7.8 for the wagon. It pegs the E430 at 6.4 sec and the E55 at 5.4. Our tests suggest all are credible figures. Automatic transmission is smooth and responsive, regardless of model.
Fuel Economy

E320 sdn E320 wgn E430 sdn E55 AMG Class Average
5 5 4 4 4.6

Test averages mirror EPA city ratings, at around 20 mpg for the E320s, 17 for the E430s. Test E55 averaged 19.2 mpg, though with mostly highway driving. All models require premium fuel.
Ride Quality

E320 sdn E320 wgn E430 sdn E55 AMG Class Average
9 9 9 7 7.2

A model blend of comfort and control. Stability great at highway speeds, and most bumps easily absorbed, though firm E55 thumps over rough pavement and expansion joints.
Steering/Handling/Braking

E320 sdn E320 wgn E430 sdn E55 AMG Class Average
7 7 7 9 6.7

More athletic than the typical luxury 4 dr, but not as nimble as a BMW 5-Series. Still, steering firm and precise, body lean modest even in hard cornering. Traction/antiskid systems give these rear-drive cars acceptable grip on snowy roads, but 4Matic is unerring in any condition.
Quietness

E320 sdn E320 wgn E430 sdn E55 AMG Class Average
8 8 8 6 6.8

Engines well-muffled even at full throttle, and what little noise they make sounds classy. Low wind rustle too. Only minor tire rumble, but more in E55 than other models.
Controls

E320 sdn E320 wgn E430 sdn E55 AMG Class Average
6 6 5 6 6.3

Mercedes' usual design and layout is mostly effective. Some switch markings not intuitive, though, and console-mounted power-window switches aren't to everyone's liking.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

E320 sdn E320 wgn E430 sdn E55 AMG Class Average
8 8 8 8 7

Wide console makes things feel cozy, but adults aren't confined. Ample leg-stretching space, plus good head clearance for 6-footers. All models offer good visibility from a comfortable, easily tailored driver's post.
Room/Comfort (rear)

E320 sdn E320 wgn E430 sdn E55 AMG Class Average
6 6 6 6 5.4

A bulky transmission tunnel precludes long-distance comfort for a middle rider, but outboard leg room is good even with the long-travel front seats fully aft. No-strain entry/exit, too.
Cargo Room

E320 sdn E320 wgn E430 sdn E55 AMG Class Average
4 8 4 4 4.2

Plentiful across the board, helped by flat floors and low liftovers. Wagon's standard rear-facing third seat folds easily for cargo, but is sized for kids, not grownups.
Value within Class

E320 sdn E320 wgn E430 sdn E55 AMG Class Average
10 9 8 4 5.1

Unqualified Best-Buy luxury choices, with top-notch quality, high resale value, great all-around performance, and many safety features, including available 4Matic. The E320s are the best dollar buys.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
