Vehicle Highlights
Mazda changes the name of its compact pickup for 2002, from the B-Series to simply the Truck. New off-road equipment highlights this year's changes. These Ford-built pickups share their design with the Ford Ranger but differ slightly in styling and features. The B2300 has a 2.3-liter 4-cyl engine. B3000s use a 3.0-liter V6, B4000s a 4.0 V6. All offer manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic. B2300s are rear-wheel drive only. The other models offer rear drive or 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing. ABS is standard. Cab Plus extended-cabs have no rear doors. Extended Cab Plus 4s have two rear-hinged rear doors that do not open independently of the front doors. Both extended cabs have two folding rear jump seats. Dual Sport models have 2WD but use a 4x4-style raised suspension. New for the 4WD B4000 is an optional Off-Road Package that includes bucket seats, running boards, and 31-inch tires. The B2300's new SE-5 option includes air conditioning, AM/FM/CD audio, and styled steel wheels. Performance and accommodations mirror similarly equipped Rangers.
COMPETITION
Among compact pickups two vehicles really stand out: The Dodge Dakota and the Ford Ranger (and clone Mazda Truck). Dakota is the only one to offer a V8 engine, full-time 4WD, and near-full-size cargo and towing capacity. Ranger is the most refined and probably the best daily use vehicle.
This year we are limiting our Recommended choice to the Toyota Tacoma. It's every bit as good as the Ranger in daily use, just a tad more expensive.
