2002 Lincoln Town Car Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2002 Lincoln Town Car Review
America's only rear-wheel-drive full-size luxury sedan is set to end its 2002 season this summer with the release of a more-powerful, restyled 2003 Town Car. Meantime, the biggest '02 change is to treat option packages as separate models. Town Car's V8 has 225 hp in the base Executive and regular Signature models. It has 235 hp in Signature Touring, Premium, and Premium Touring models and in Cartier, Cartier Premium, and Cartier L versions. Cartier L aims at the limousine trade with a 6-inch longer wheelbase and an extra 6 inches of rear leg room. Touring models include a firmer suspension and wider tires. All have 4-speed automatic transmission, traction control, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, power-adjustable pedals, leather upholstery, and front bench seat. New for '02 is an in-dash CD changer standard for Cartier Premium and optional for others except the Executive. Available for all is Lincoln's new Vehicle Communications System, providing "one-button" emergency assistance, concierge services, and information via satellite link and voice-activated hands-free phone; Sprint cell service is required. The '03 Town Car is due in summer 2002 with revised steering, suspension, and structure, all aimed at better ride and handling. Added midyear was a Limited Edition Package option for Signature and Signature Premium models.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range and obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $44,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. The refined Lexus LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at just under $55,000. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
Lincoln's best-seller hasn't been selling as well as it used to. On a year-to-year basis, Town Car was down 19.7 percent for the first nine months of 2001 after losing 4 percent in calendar 2000 and 13 percent in 1999. We think the main problem is too little recent change in the face of stronger class competition, though an economic downtown hasn't helped.

But Town Car finally gets some changes of substance with the 2003 models, which Lincoln says will start sale in March 2002. Appearance is broadly similar, belying mostly new outer sheetmetal, but the tail is reshaped to provide more luggage space, accessible through an 8-inch wider opening, and a new front end houses an uprated 4.6-liter V8 with 300 hp instead of 225/240. Wheels grow from 16- to 17-inch diameter, allowing larger brakes, and the frame, suspension and steering are all reengineered for claimed improvements in structural stiffness, ride comfort, and handling poise. High-intensity headlamps will be available on selected models. We'll have more details soon, so keep checking back with is.

Down the road, sources say Town Car will be replaced by an all-new big Lincoln sedan designed with less "American luxury" and more European style, performance and handling--a quasi-rival to larger BMW and Mercedes models. Timing isn't firm yet, but Detroit detectives think model-year 2005 or '06. We'd guess the current Town Car will hang on for a year or two after that, if only to give its more conservative buyers time to adjust to the new order.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Executive Cartier L Class Average
4 4 6.5

Town Cars trail Cadillac DeVilles for acceleration, though they're sufficiently quick, at under 10 sec 0-60 mph in our tests. The heavier Cartier L doesn't feel significantly slower. Transmission provides seamless upshifts but is hesitant to downshift.
Fuel Economy

Executive Cartier L Class Average
4 4 4.2

About par for the class at 17.3 mpg in our tests. Uses regular fuel.
Ride Quality

Executive Cartier L Class Average
7 8 8

Absorbent and hushed, spoiled by mild float over humps and minor tire pattering on some freeway surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Executive Cartier L Class Average
5 5 6.6

Even with Touring "sport" suspension, far more body roll and less grip than most import-brand rivals. Steering reasonably accurate, but too light and numb. Traction control is essential in the snow belt, but Town Car's system can kill power at the just wrong moment for maintaining speed on slippery surfaces. Braking short and stable for such softly sprung heavyweights, but with nonlinear pedal action and marked nosedive.
Quietness

Executive Cartier L Class Average
7 7 7.5

Fine, but not best in class. There's little road noise and just a muted engine note. Wind rush rises above 60 mph but doesn't intrude.
Controls

Executive Cartier L Class Average
7 7 5.3

Ultratraditional dashboard design, but handy and guess-free. Power-adjustable pedals allow shorter drivers to sit a safer distance from airbag. Interior materials less classy than those in Cadillacs and most import-brand rivals.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Executive Cartier L Class Average
7 7 7.8

Standard bench can squeeze three across, but middle passenger must straddle transmission hump. Head room is abundant, as is outboard leg room. Visibility is hampered by thick roof pillars, slim rear window.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Executive Cartier L Class Average
6 8 7

Cartier L's 47.1 inches of rear leg room is tops among regular factory automobiles. Other Town Cars have good rather than great leg room. All have generous head clearance. Still, three adults is a squeeze, and the ill-formed rear cushion isn't as sofa-comfortable as it looks.
Cargo Room

Executive Cartier L Class Average
6 6 4.9

Trunk volume concentrated in a deep center well that makes loading and unloading heavy objects a strain.
Value within Class

Executive Cartier L Class Average
3 3 4.6

Cadillac's DeVille is far more modern and better executed, but Town Car delivers traditional American luxury, spaciousness, and isolation, and its base prices are among the lowest in this class.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
