Vehicle Highlights
DVD entertainment and navigation systems are available on Land Rover's midsize SUV for 2002. Discovery comes in base SD and uplevel SE versions. Both have a 188-hp V8, 4-speed automatic transmission, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, and all-wheel drive with low-range gearing and traction control. A Rear Seat Package increases passenger capacity from five to seven and changes badging to SD7 and SE7. Optional on SE is the Performance Package with Land Rover's Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) suspension that uses hydraulic rams to reduce body lean in turns. Also included in the package is rear self-leveling suspension. Standard on SE are leather upholstery and 18-inch wheels vs. the SD's 16s. The new navigation and entertainment systems are exclusive SE options. Land Rover is owned by Ford.
COMPETITION
This is by far the hottest market segment right now. Crowded with more than 20 vehicles, midsize SUVs vary in size and type but nearly all seat five adults and offer V6 or V8 engines. Our Best Buys are the Acura MDX and Toyota Highlander. Both offer competence, convenience, and attractive pricing and design. They lack serious off-road 4WD systems, however.
Our Recommended choices feature more-traditional SUVs: the Dodge Durango, which offers optional third-row seating; the top-selling Ford Explorer; the utilitarian Nissan Xterra; and the refined GMC Envoy. If you don't venture off-road too far take a look at the car-based Lexus RX 300 as well.
