2002 Jaguar XK Series Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2002 Jaguar XK Series Review
Jaguar's sporting coupe and convertible gain a limited-edition anniversary model for 2002. All XKs have a 4.0-liter V8 and 5-speed automatic transmission. XK8s have 290 hp, the supercharged XKRs have 370. Both come as coupes or as convertibles with a power top and heated glass rear window. XKR versions have a louvered hood, rear spoiler, 18-inch wheels (vs. 17s), and computer-controlled shock absorbers. Commemorating the 1902 birth of Jaguar founder William Lyons, the new XKR 100 comes with 20-inch wheels, Brembro-brand brakes, Recaro-brand seats, and exclusive interior and exterior trim. Jaguar will import 270 XKR 100 convertibles and 30 coupes. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, traction control, front side airbags, and a rear-obstacle-warning system are standard on all models.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range and obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $44,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. The refined Lexus LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at just under $55,000. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
Year-to-year XK sales rose 9.3 percent in calendar 2000, then tumbled 12.6 percent in the worsening economic climate of 2001. Then again, these are high-priced low-volume niche models with typical U.S. sales of only 5000-7000 a year.

A fully redesigned XK is being readied for model-year 2004 as project "X150." It shares key underskin components and some architecture with Jaguar's all-new 2003 XJ sedans, which means a new, largely aluminum inner structure and a weight reduction of several hundred pounds over today's all-steel XKs. Also borrowed from the new sedans' are a computer-controlled air-spring suspension and a more sophisticated traction/antiskid system. Engines will again comprise regular and supercharged V8s, but with respective horsepower lifted to 300 and 400 via a displacement boost from 4.0 to 4.3 liters. Coupe and convertible body styles continue too, but with slightly expanded dimensions for roomier, more comfortable rear seating. Spy photos suggest evolutionary styling, but the ragtop's fabric roof will power beneath a metal cover instead of riding on the body.

Also coming in 2004 is the eagerly awaited two-seat F-Type, Jaguar's first true sports car since the last classic E-Type models of 1975. F-Type had been on-again/off-again for several years until Jaguar gave it the public green light in early 2001. Recent British reports say the design follows the Ford Thunderbird formula in using a shortened, modified Lincoln LS/Jaguar S-Type sedan platform, but clothed in a unique convertible body with more than a few visual links to the slinky E-Type. As in the next-generation XKs, the fabric top powers beneath a hard cover. A 300-hp 4.3-liter V8 should be the mainstay engine, but a 400-hp supercharged version seems likely sometime later on. Intriguingly, Jaguar describes F-Type as a "more affordable" compliment to the XK line, which bolsters insider talk of a base price in the $40,000-$50,000 range.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
7 8 7.8

Test XK8 convertible clocked 0-60 mph in 6.9 sec. Jaguar says XKRs take 5.3 sec, which seems accurate based on our test drives.
Fuel Economy

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
4 4 4.6

Test XK8 convertibles averaged 15-16 mpg, test XKR convertible 16.2. All versions require premium fuel.
Ride Quality

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
8 7 4

Calibrated for comfort. XKRs have tauter damping, but all models ride comfortably on most surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
7 8 8.3

XKRs are more agile and controlled than XK8s, but these 2-ton cats are luxury tourers, not feline-reflex sports cars. Brakes make short, undramatic simulated panic stops.
Quietness

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
5 5 3.6

Jaguar's V8 is nearly silent at idle. XKRs add a modest whine to the muted full-throttle growl, but never annoy. Low tire noise too, but convertibles suffer noticeable top-up wind rush.
Controls

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
5 5 5.3

Attractive and generally hassle-free, reflecting the influence of Jaguar parent Ford, though some control markings aren't that obvious. Cabin ambiance is Old World leather and wood, and assembled with appropriate care.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
4 4 5.1

Comfortable seats, but cockpit is cramped for tall folks. Low build, wide door sills hamper entry/exit. Shallow side and rear glass impede driver visibility.
Room/Comfort (rear)

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
1 1 .6

Seat shaped and sized only for two tiny toddlers, so use it for cargo instead--as you may need to.
Cargo Room

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
2 2 2.1

Not much unless you use the back seat. Coupes have 11.1 cu ft on paper but not in practice, convertible trunks only 9.5.
Value within Class

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
3 2 4.2

XKs shine for silky performance in an elegant package with Jaguar's usual charm. Interior room is tight and prices are steep, however, while resale value pales against BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz rivals.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Jaguar XK Series 2-door coupe Jaguar XK Series 2-door convertible
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
