2002 Jaguar XJ Series Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2002 Jaguar XJ Series Review
New sport and luxury models highlight 2002 for Jaguar's flagship. This sedan comes in two body lengths. For more rear leg room, Vanden Plas and Super V8 models are 5 inches longer than other versions. All have a 5-speed automatic transmission, traction control, antilock 4-wheel discs, front side airbags, and a 4.0-liter V8. XJ8, XJ Sport, and premium-luxury Vanden Plas models have 290 hp. XJR, XJR 100, and Super V8 models use a supercharger for 370 hp. The XJ Sport is new for '02 and essentially combines the base powertrain with the XJR's 18-inch wheels, sport seats, and body-color exterior trim. Also new is the XJR 100, a limited-edition marking the 1902 birth of Jaguar founder William Lyons; it adds exclusive-design 19-inch wheels and special trim. The Super V8 replaces the Vanden Plas Supercharged model and includes a touring-tuned version of Jaguar's computer-controlled suspension. The XJR for '02 adds as standard a sport-tuned computer suspension and a navigation system.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range and obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $44,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. The refined Lexus LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at just under $55,000. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
Jaguar's senior sedan is being redesigned for 2003 and a late-2002 U.S. debut. Developed as project "X350," it replaces the current "X300", the 1995 makeover of Jaguar's last new big sedan, the 1987 "XJ40".

Full details weren't available for this report, but X350 will use a heavily modified S-Type/Lincoln LS platform to be somewhat longer and wider than current XJs. Wheelbases are stretched 4 inches for extra legroom in both standard and long-body models. Despite the dimensional gains, weight reportedly drops by over 400 pounds, to below 3550, via a high-tech unibody made of bonded and riveted aluminum a la Audi A8. Styling is modernized around classic XJ themes.

Being so much lighter, the new XJ may reach America with a base 3.3-liter V6, derived from the 3.0-liter Ford "Duratec" engine and good for a reported 250 hp. But this line's mainstay power will be a new 4.3-liter enlargement of Jaguar's 4.0-liter "AJ-V8," offered in normally aspirated form with 300 hp and, for a sporty new XJR, with supercharger and close to 400 hp. The transmission in all cases should be a 5-speed automatic.

Among other new features are a computer-controlled suspension with air springs instead of conventional steel coils, a more sophisticated traction/antiskid system, and Jaguar's Advanced Restraint Technology System (ARTS). The last, introduced on Jaguar's XK models, uses ultrasound occupant-position and crash-impact sensors to trigger dual-stage dashboard and front side airbags. Curtain side airbags should be standard. Options will likely include a radar-based "smart" cruise control, similar to Mercedes' Distronic system, and voice-recognition control for climate, audio and navigation functions, plus Internet and e-mail access.

Such wizardry underlines the X350's twin missions of showcasing Jaguar technology while matching or exceeding rivals for luxury, performance, refinement and roadability. The new models will be timely, as XJ sales dropped 14.2 percent in the first nine months of 2001 after a 6.3-percent decline in calendar 2000.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

XJ8 Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
7 6 8 6.5

Even with the base V8, these 2-ton sedans move with authority, aided by a quick, positive automatic transmission. Supercharged versions are hot rods; test XJR did 0-60 mph in just 5.7 sec.
Fuel Economy

XJ8 Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
4 4 2 4.2

Test XJ8 averaged 18.5 mpg, including lots of highway driving. Test Vanden Plas averaged 15.5 mpg with more city travel. Test XJRs averaged around 13 mpg. All require premium fuel.
Ride Quality

XJ8 Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
10 10 8 8

Except XJR, all are cushy and compliant, upset by only the biggest bumps and pavement heaves. Rough rail tracks can induces slight body shudder. With bigger tires and stiffer suspension, XJR suffers some jittery wheel patter and thump on blemished surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

XJ8 Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
7 7 8 6.6

Steering precise if slightly dull, and must be guided back to center after turns. Mediocre crosswind stability. In corners, XJR stays flat and grippy, but other models show marked body lean before taking a set and powering through.
Quietness

XJ8 Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
9 9 7 7.5

Quiet cats all, with minimal wind and road noise. Some supercharger moan evident at full throttle in models so equipped. Blower fan rather loud except on lowest settings.
Controls

XJ8 Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
3 3 3 5.3

Gauges unobstructed, but some controls not well placed and/or labeled. Odd "J-gate" transmission selector allows manual shifts, but lever action lacks feel. Available navigation system not that easy to use. Stitched leather, burnished wood creates a clubby British air, but like-priced Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus models are assembled with greater attention to detail.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

XJ8 Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
5 5 5 7.8

Seats arm-chair comfortable, but low-roof styling means minimal head clearance for 6-footers and compromised positioning for large drivers. Long front footwells feel confining. Center console can't open with cupholders in use.
Room/Comfort (rear)

XJ8 Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
5 7 5 7

Head room also tight here, even though seat cushion is too low for comfort. Leg space limited except in long models. Entry/exit demands crouching, again due to low-roof styling. Vanden Plas models have classy fold-down wood writing tables, but no model has rear cupholders.
Cargo Room

XJ8 Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
2 2 2 4.9

Tail styling limits trunk height enough to make cargo volume subpar for the class. At least the hold has a regular shape and low load sill.
Value within Class

XJ8 Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
3 3 3 4.6

They're too cozy inside for their bulk outside, but the XJs shine for top-notch ride and refinement; potent, silky V8s; and evergreen British charm. These Jags are aging quickly, but under Ford's ownership, poor workmanship and reliability are no longer pressing issues.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
