2002 Isuzu Rodeo Review
Isuzu builds only trucks, and its best-seller is unchanged for 2002 except for options availability. Rodeo features a base S model with 4- and 6-cyl engines and V6 LS and LSE versions. All offer rear-wheel drive or 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing. A side-hinged tailgate mounting the spare tire sits below a flip-up glass hatch. For 2002, the former Ironman option is effectively replaced by the 4WD LS Chrome Package, which includes 18-inch wheels and tires as well as Isuzu's Intelligent Suspension Control, which automatically varies shock-absorber firmness and is standard for Rodeo LSE. Isuzu had shared Rodeo's design with Honda, which sold a near twin of the Rodeo as the Passport. Honda replaces Passport for the 2003 model year with its new Pilot SUV. Isuzu says Rodeo will continue into the '03 model year.
Competition
This is by far the hottest market segment right now. Crowded with more than 20 vehicles, midsize SUVs vary in size and type but nearly all seat five adults and offer V6 or V8 engines. Our Best Buys are the Acura MDX and Toyota Highlander. Both offer competence, convenience, and attractive pricing and design. They lack serious off-road 4WD systems, however.

Our Recommended choices feature more-traditional SUVs: the Dodge Durango, which offers optional third-row seating; the top-selling Ford Explorer; the utilitarian Nissan Xterra; and the refined GMC Envoy. If you don't venture off-road too far take a look at the car-based Lexus RX 300 as well.
News
Rodeo had been accounting for half of Isuzu's U.S. sales, but was up to 75 percent in the first nine months of 2001. While all Isuzus lost sales ground in the period, Rodeo did well to slide only some 8 percent year-to-year, handicapped as it is by the oldest basic design among midsize SUVS and the general economic downturn.

A redesigned Rodeo hadn't been expected until model-year 2005, but late word has it on the agenda for '03. Basic design and engineering are Isuzu's own, and also turn up in Chevrolet's 2003 Colorado compact pickups, which replace today's S-10s. That suggests Rodeo will remain a truck-type SUV, though more refined than the outgoing model, we hope. We don't expect three-row seating, however, as package size likely won't change much. Styling, of course, will be all-new.

Little else is known now, but the platform sharing with Chevrolet makes it possible that Rodeo will abandon Isuzu's own V6 for the GM 4.2-liter inline 6-cyl that powers the new Chevy TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy SUVs. An entry-level Rodeo may come with a 5-cyl version of that engine that's slated to be offered in Colorados.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

S 2WD, auto. LS 4WD, auto. LSE 4WD Class Average
2 5 5 4.7

Rodeo is sluggish with the 4 cyl, but V6 Rodeos and Passports feel peppy and show good passing power. Test 4WD Rodeo LS did 0-60 mph in 8.2 sec, an LSE in 9.3; both had automatic transmission. Unfortunately, the automatic can dither in full-throttle downshifts. And most rival SUVs don't need to disengage 4WD on dry pavement.
Fuel Economy

S 2WD, auto. LS 4WD, auto. LSE 4WD Class Average
4 3 3 3.8

Typical of 6-cyl midsize SUVs. Test 4WD Rodeo LS averaged 15.8 mpg, the LSE 14.5.
Ride Quality

S 2WD, auto. LS 4WD, auto. LSE 4WD Class Average
2 2 2 4

Choppy on rough pavement, harsh over big bumps and potholes. Adjustable shock absorbers make little discernible difference.
Steering/Handling/Braking

S 2WD, auto. LS 4WD, auto. LSE 4WD Class Average
4 4 4 3.5

Among the more-agile midsize SUVs but still plenty trucky, with lots of body lean and tire squeal in tight turns.
Quietness

S 2WD, auto. LS 4WD, auto. LSE 4WD Class Average
4 4 4 4

Tire noise considerable at highway speeds, wind rush even more so. Marked engine roar at full throttle.
Controls

S 2WD, auto. LS 4WD, auto. LSE 4WD Class Average
6 6 6 6

Undersized audio controls mar a dated but convenient dashboard. Cabin materials nothing special and decor rather spartan, but available leather upholstery helps somewhat.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

S 2WD, auto. LS 4WD, auto. LSE 4WD Class Average
6 6 6 6.2

Supportive seats, plenty of head room, and a lower step-in height than most SUVs, but seats are too low to the floor and the driver seat lacks both height adjustment and sufficient rearward travel for the long-of-leg. Outside spare tire hinders vision astern.
Room/Comfort (rear)

S 2WD, auto. LS 4WD, auto. LSE 4WD Class Average
4 4 4 5.1

Narrow door openings hamper entry/exit. Toe space minimal, but otherwise good room for two adults.
Cargo Room

S 2WD, auto. LS 4WD, auto. LSE 4WD Class Average
8 8 8 7.7

Side-hinged tailgate demands cumbersome two-handed operation: Opening requires raising the window; closing demands releasing a lever in the hinge area.
Value within Class

S 2WD, auto. LS 4WD, auto. LSE 4WD Class Average
2 3 3 4.5

V6 Rodeos and Passports emphasize the sport in sport-utility, but an aging basic design leaves them way behind the competition in most respects, especially in ride and 4WD convenience. Prices aren't that attractive either.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Side Impact, Driver 5
Side Impact, Rear Passenger 5
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
