2002 Isuzu Axiom Review
Isuzu's newest SUV puts a sleeker body on the midsize Rodeo chassis and uses a larger V6. Axiom offers base and uplevel XS models with rear-wheel drive or Isuzu's Torque On Demand 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement and has low-range gearing. A 4-speed automatic is the only transmission. Axiom shares Rodeo's wheelbase but is 6 inches longer and about 1.6 inches taller. Side airbags are not available, but standards include ABS, 17-inch alloy wheels, and Isuzu's Intelligent Suspension Control (basically electronically managed shock-absorber damping). Axiom 4x4s have rear disc brakes instead of drums. XS upgrades the base model with fog lamps, sunroof, heated front seats, and leather upholstery.
Competition
This is by far the hottest market segment right now. Crowded with more than 20 vehicles, midsize SUVs vary in size and type but nearly all seat five adults and offer V6 or V8 engines. Our Best Buys are the Acura MDX and Toyota Highlander. Both offer competence, convenience, and attractive pricing and design. They lack serious off-road 4WD systems, however.

Our Recommended choices feature more-traditional SUVs: the Dodge Durango, which offers optional third-row seating; the top-selling Ford Explorer; the utilitarian Nissan Xterra; and the refined GMC Envoy. If you don't venture off-road too far take a look at the car-based Lexus RX 300 as well.
News
This duded-up Rodeo has generated mixed reactions among both journalists and the general public. That may explain why initial sales were an unimpressive 3209 units through the first nine months of 2001.

With Rodeo itself being redesigned for '03, Axiom should be updated along similar lines eventually, at least underneath. Then again, that sluggish early-days sales performance doesn't bode well for the future, especially now that majority shareholder General Motors is pressuring Isuzu to get its financial house in order, fast.
