Vehicle Highlights
Hyundai's flagship sedan gains a larger engine for 2002, a change reflected in its new model name. The XG350 has a 3.5-liter V6 vs. the 3.0 used in the XG300. The new engine gains only 2 hp, but has 38 more lb-ft of torque. A 5-speed automatic with manual shift gate is the only transmission. Standard equipment includes front side airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, traction control, and leather upholstery. The XG350L model includes a sunroof and seat/mirror memory. Hyundai is South Korea's biggest automaker and the XG350 is basically its compact Sonata stretched to midsize dimensions and given different styling. Hyundai's basic warranty is among the industry's longest: 5-years/60,000-mi. bumper-to-bumper, 10/100,000 powertrain.
COMPETITION
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan forms, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced.
Recommended models include the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, plain-Jane Ford Taurus, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. The restyled and larger Nissan Altima is new to the Recommended list this year. We are impressed with interior room and road manners, but disappointed by the budget-level interior materials and assembly.
