2002 Hyundai Elantra Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2002 Hyundai Elantra Review
Elantra is the larger of Hyundai's two subcompact cars. It comes as the GLS 4-dr sedan and GT 4-dr hatchback. Both have a 2.0-liter 4-cyl engine and manual or optional automatic transmission. Front side airbags are standard. ABS with traction control is optional; 4-wheel disc brakes are standard on the GT and included with ABS on the GLS. Standard equipment includes air conditioning and power windows/locks/mirrors. GTs add a sport suspension, alloy wheels, and leather upholstery. Hyundai's warranty is one of the industry's longest: 5-years/60,000-mi. basic, 10/100,000 powertrain.
Competition
A perennial favorite, the Honda Civic, is as good as ever. We love the wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. We also love almost everything about the Ford Focus, but were reluctant to rank it a Best Buy because it was new from the ground up. After a year of living with a ZTS model, we can say that the reliability is good. Focus ranks a notch below Civic in some areas but costs less.

Topping the crowded Recommended list are the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys. However, they are among the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the no-frills Toyota Echo, the sporty Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege.
News
Total Hyundai sales have been mostly higher in 2001, but Elantra has been down. Though still Hyundai's top U.S. money-spinner, Elantra eased 2.9 percent in year-to-year sales for the first nine months after more than doubling in calendar '99 and adding 25 percent to that in 2000.

Elantra's only near-term news is the return of a wagon body style. This had been promised for '02, but has yet to appear. We'd guess Hyundai is saving it as an early 2003 announcement, with sales commencing by next summer if not before. Hyundai admits it goofed by not including a wagon in Elantra's 2001 redesign, underestimating its U.S. sales appeal. The new wagon should be priced close to the GT hatchback, but will probably be equipped like the GLS sedan.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

GLS, man. GLS, auto. GT, man. Class Average
5 4 5 3.7

Test manual-transmission models did 0-60 mph in 8.4 sec, brisk for a subcompact. Automatic-transmission versions have only adequate pickup, though the transmission is reasonably smooth and responsive.
Fuel Economy

GLS, man. GLS, auto. GT, man. Class Average
7 6 7 6.7

Test manual transmission Elantras averaged 25.2-25.9 mpg. Haven't yet measured with automatic, but EPA ratings are only 1 mpg lower.
Ride Quality

GLS, man. GLS, auto. GT, man. Class Average
5 5 5 4.1

GT rides about the same as GLS, despite its "sport" suspension. Both surprisingly composed for entry-level subcompacts. Absorb most rough stuff with ease and jiggle some on freeways, but not severely.
Steering/Handling/Braking

GLS, man. GLS, auto. GT, man. Class Average
5 5 5 4.9

GLS is dull but competent, cornering with noticeable body lean but good stability. Non-ABS test car showed moderate dive and good modulation in hard stops, but also early left-front-wheel locking. GT's suspension again makes little difference.
Quietness

GLS, man. GLS, auto. GT, man. Class Average
4 4 4 3.6

Engine makes unpleasant high-rpm snarl. Tire noise noticeable on coarse pavement. Test GLS had minor wind leak from driver door.
Controls

GLS, man. GLS, auto. GT, man. Class Average
6 6 6 5.6

Ordinary but well done. Steering wheel may not tilt high enough for some. A few cheapo plastic bits spoil basically nice cabin decor. Test GLS had a buzz in the steering-column area.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

GLS, man. GLS, auto. GT, man. Class Average
4 4 4 4.4

Not midsize-car spacious, but 6-footers will have no complaints, though tall drivers might like more rearward seat travel. Height-adjustable seat is standard. Visibility fine in sedan, a bit better in sloped-tail hatchback.
Room/Comfort (rear)

GLS, man. GLS, auto. GT, man. Class Average
4 4 4 3.2

Another pleasant surprise. Though too narrow for three adults, there's good head and leg room for two, plus adequate foot space. Narrowish rear-door thresholds don't severely impede entry/exit.
Cargo Room

GLS, man. GLS, auto. GT, man. Class Average
2 2 6 3.3

Sedan's trunk isn't of class-leading size, but adequately roomy. GT combines hatchback versatility with 4-dr convenience.
Value within Class

GLS, man. GLS, auto. GT, man. Class Average
5 5 5 4.7

In features, comfort, and even road manners, Elantra is a budget alternative to the class-leading but costlier Honda Civic and Ford Focus. However, cars from this South Korean automaker haven't earned a reputation for long-term reliability, and their resale values are low.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

The Exhaust Emission Warranty covers corrosion-related parts for 2 years/24,000 miles, plus 8 years/80,000 miles on the catalytic converter and any on-board diagnostic device. The Passenger Restraint Warranty covers seat belts and airbags for 5 years/50,000 miles.
