ACCELERATION
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 3.7 |
We haven't tested a GS or GL with the 1.6 liter engine, but they should be a little quicker than the sluggish 11.2-sec 0-60 mph time of our 1.5-liter L test car. Any Accent still will demand noisy full-throttle operation for passing or freeway merging.
FUEL ECONOMY
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 6.7 |
Test 1.5-liter hatchback averaged 29.6 mpg. The 1.6-liter models should do about as well.
RIDE QUALITY
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 4.1 |
Accent absorbs small bumps reasonably well, but large potholes can be jolting, and ride is jiggly on washboard surfaces.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 4.9 |
Low-achiever tires limit grip, but Accent corners predictably with moderate body lean. It also makes reasonably short simulated panic stops despite minor rear-wheel locking and marked, but not alarming, nosedive. Lack of ABS option is unfortunate.
QUIETNESS
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 3.6 |
No car in this price range is really quiet, but Accent is class-competitive for noise and vibration.
CONTROLS
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.6 |
Simple and straightforward, with clearly marked controls in easy reach. Optional white-faced gauges brighten the look.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 4.4 |
Taller drivers might feel crowded at the wheel, as the seat doesn't have much rearward travel. GL and GS have height-adjustable driver seat. Seats are comfortable and supportive for everyday commuting, but longer trips may prove tiring.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 3.2 |
Seat is too narrow for three adults and too flat for good support. Not enough leg and head room for anyone over 6-feet tall. Entry/exit just OK in the sedan, a pinch in hatchbacks.
CARGO ROOM
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 3.3 |
Not vast, but comparable to that of most rivals. Sedans are limited by a short, narrow trunklid. All models have folding rear seat; split folding on GL and GS.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 4.7 |
Accent makes some sense as a budget-priced commuter car that's reasonably well-made and comes with a generous warranty. However, most rivals offer better performance and refinement than Accent for little more money. And Hyundai lags most every non-Korean brand in resale value.
