2002 GMC Sonoma Review
GMC's version of the Chevrolet S-10 adds air conditioning and a tachometer as standard on all models for 2002. And the long cargo bed, which had been dropped at the beginning of the model year, has been reinstated. Sonoma comes in 2-dr regular cab, 3-dr extended cab, and 4-dr Crew Cab body styles. Regular and extended cabs come with a 6-ft bed in either Wideside or flared-fender Sportside form; the 7.3-ft long bed is available only on the regular cab. Crew Cabs use a 4.6-ft Wideside bed. New options include a bed extender that folds out from the rear of the cargo box, and for Crew Cabs, a rigid, locking bed cover. Regulars and extendeds offer bench or bucket front seats; Crews have buckets. Extended cabs have a left-side rear-hinged back door and one rear jump seat. Crew Cabs have a 3-passenger rear bench. A 6-disc in-dash CD changer is a new '02 option, and Crew Cabs are now available with heated front seats. Regular cabs come only with rear-wheel drive, Crew Cabs only with 4WD. Extended cabs offer 2WD or 4WD. The 4WD system must be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing. A 4-cyl engine is standard on 2WD models. A V6 is standard with 4WD, optional with 2WD. Short-bed regular and extended cabs offer manual or automatic transmission. Crew Cabs and long beds automatic only. ABS is standard, and 4x4s get 4-wheel disc brakes. Maximum towing capacity is 6000 lb. Sonoma's performance and accommodations mirror those of equivalent S-10s.
Competition
Among compact pickups two vehicles really stand out: The Dodge Dakota and the Ford Ranger (and clone Mazda Truck). Dakota is the only one to offer a V8 engine, full-time 4WD, and near-full-size cargo and towing capacity. Ranger is the most refined and probably the best daily use vehicle.

This year we are limiting our Recommended choice to the Toyota Tacoma. It's every bit as good as the Ranger in daily use, just a tad more expensive.
News
Sonoma will evidently be dropped after the 2003 model year as part of GMC's effort to offer "premium" trucks not available from in-house rival Chevrolet--and presumably anyone else. GMC shouldn't lose much by abandoning compact pickups, especially as Sonoma sales dropped 20.4 percent in the first nine months of 2001 vs the year-earlier period.

To take over Sonoma's place in the lineup, GMC is said to be eyeing a "crossover" wagon being engineered by Isuzu, General Motors' Japanese affiliate. This vehicle is still in the early design phases, so outsiders don't yet have a clue as to what it will be like. But Isuzu is just as truck-oriented as GMC, so we'd expect rugged styling and a "real SUV" 4WD with low-range gearing combined with upscale luxuries of the sort GMC now emphasizes.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

SL reg. cab 2WD, man. SLS ext. cab 4WD, auto. SLS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
3 5 5 4.2

Four-cyl models perform best with manual transmission. Automatic transmission or heavy hauling warrants a V6.
Fuel Economy

SL reg. cab 2WD, man. SLS ext. cab 4WD, auto. SLS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
5 5 5 4.2

Test 4-cyl model averaged 19.8 mpg, test 4WD extended-cab versions 15.9-16.5. GM recommends regular-grade fuel for all engines.
Ride Quality

SL reg. cab 2WD, man. SLS ext. cab 4WD, auto. SLS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
3 3 3 3.6

Base suspension provides relatively soft, controlled ride. Firmer off-road and heavy-duty suspensions give a harsh ride, so try before you buy. As in any unloaded truck, the rear end tends to hop over sharp bumps and ridges.
Steering/Handling/Braking

SL reg. cab 2WD, man. SLS ext. cab 4WD, auto. SLS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
3 3 3 3.4

Cornering lean is evident with any suspension, but Sonomas generally feel balanced in turns, with a natural feel to the power steering and good resistance to crosswinds.
Quietness

SL reg. cab 2WD, man. SLS ext. cab 4WD, auto. SLS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
3 3 3 3.4

Wind noise moderate, but engines gruff when cold. Road noise fairly low with 2WD, higher with 4WD's knobby tires.
Controls

SL reg. cab 2WD, man. SLS ext. cab 4WD, auto. SLS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
5 5 5 5.9

Gauges are unobstructed. Soft-touch rotary knobs for climate system along with large buttons for audio system enhance simple control layout. Some plastics look, feel low-budget.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

SL reg. cab 2WD, man. SLS ext. cab 4WD, auto. SLS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
3 4 4 4

Front-seat comfort is good. Extended- and crew-cabs benefit from generous rearward seat travel.
Room/Comfort (rear)

SL reg. cab 2WD, man. SLS ext. cab 4WD, auto. SLS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
0 1 3 1.5

Extended-cab's rear jump seat suits only children. (Rival Ford Ranger/Mazda B-Series extended-cabs offer two rear doors and two rear jump seats.) Crew Cab's independent front-hinged rear doors are more convenient than any extended-cab's rear-hinged doors, but its seat is low to the floor and there isn't a lot of legroom.
Cargo Room

SL reg. cab 2WD, man. SLS ext. cab 4WD, auto. SLS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
1 3 4 2.7

Slight behind seat in regular cabs. Fold rear seat and pile high for good storage space in extended and crew cabs. Cabin provides cupholders and bins; door panels have map pockets.
Value within Class

SL reg. cab 2WD, man. SLS ext. cab 4WD, auto. SLS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
3 4 5 6.6

We rate the Dodge Dakota, Ranger/B-Series, and Toyota Tacoma higher overall, GM's trucks suffering from an aging design. But their price, payload, power, and available crew cab are competitive, and discounts are readily available.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
NA = price note available, NC = no charge.
