Vehicle Highlights
America's best-selling compact SUV gets new model names and a midyear modification to its automatic-transmission shift lever. This 4-dr wagon has a rear liftgate with separate-opening glass. For '02, base XLS and uplevel XLT versions get new subseries models called Value, Sport, Choice, and Premium; XLT also adds top-line Midnight edition. Each has escalating levels of equipment. Escape is offered with two powertrain combinations: a 4-cyl engine with manual transmission, or a V6 with automatic. Both combinations are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing; a dashboard switch on AWD models locks in a 50/50 front/rear torque split. ABS is standard on XLT versions, optional on XLS models. Front side airbags are optional on both. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, front bucket seats with console, and folding rear seatback (split/folding on XLTs). XLS models have 15-inch wheels, XLTs get 16s. Audio systems are upgraded for 2002, including an in-dash 6-disc CD changer with MP3 player as standard on XLS Sport and XLT Midnight. The promised shortened automatic-transmission shift lever is designed to provide easier access to some dashboard controls. Also due as an option is Ford's No Boundaries roof rack that slides rearward and down to ease loading. Mazda sells a similar vehicle badged as the Tribute.
COMPETITION
Ignored in the past, compact SUVs are now some of the hottest-selling vehicles around. Though our Best Buys, the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Mazda Tribute don't offer true off-road ability, they do mix ride comfort, cargo capacity, and versatility with all-weather traction. The V6 Tribute/Escape offers more power, comfort, and space than any in its class.
Another car-based mini-SUV, the Subaru Forester, is our Recommended choice. Like the CR-V it doesn't have a low range for serious off-road use, but it blends excellent on-road manners with SUV styling.
