2002 Ford Escape Review
America's best-selling compact SUV gets new model names and a midyear modification to its automatic-transmission shift lever. This 4-dr wagon has a rear liftgate with separate-opening glass. For '02, base XLS and uplevel XLT versions get new subseries models called Value, Sport, Choice, and Premium; XLT also adds top-line Midnight edition. Each has escalating levels of equipment. Escape is offered with two powertrain combinations: a 4-cyl engine with manual transmission, or a V6 with automatic. Both combinations are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing; a dashboard switch on AWD models locks in a 50/50 front/rear torque split. ABS is standard on XLT versions, optional on XLS models. Front side airbags are optional on both. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, front bucket seats with console, and folding rear seatback (split/folding on XLTs). XLS models have 15-inch wheels, XLTs get 16s. Audio systems are upgraded for 2002, including an in-dash 6-disc CD changer with MP3 player as standard on XLS Sport and XLT Midnight. The promised shortened automatic-transmission shift lever is designed to provide easier access to some dashboard controls. Also due as an option is Ford's No Boundaries roof rack that slides rearward and down to ease loading. Mazda sells a similar vehicle badged as the Tribute.
Competition
Ignored in the past, compact SUVs are now some of the hottest-selling vehicles around. Though our Best Buys, the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Mazda Tribute don't offer true off-road ability, they do mix ride comfort, cargo capacity, and versatility with all-weather traction. The V6 Tribute/Escape offers more power, comfort, and space than any in its class.

Another car-based mini-SUV, the Subaru Forester, is our Recommended choice. Like the CR-V it doesn't have a low range for serious off-road use, but it blends excellent on-road manners with SUV styling.
News
Though the redesigned Explorer has had early sales troubles, Ford's compact SUV has been more than taking up the slack, drawing a healthy 124,000 orders from its late-2000 launch through the third quarter of 2001. Evidently, early recalls to fix minor problems haven't dampened Escape's sales appeal.

Minor styling and equipment changes are due for 2003, along with a new "green" model with hybrid power, the first such Ford available to the public.Though full details have yet to be released, the Escape HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) harnesses a small 4-cyl gasoline engine--probably the current 2.0-liter unit--with an electric drive motor and a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack, supplied by Japan's Sanyo. As in Honda's Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system, the HEV's gas engine handles all driving except full-throttle acceleration, when it's temporarily boosted by the motor/battery pack. Also like Honda's IMA, the gas engine shuts off when the HEV is stopped or coasting, and a regenerative braking feature turns the motor into a generator for keeping the batteries juiced, so no external charging is required.

Ford has been mum so far on battery range, but has said the HEV will go 500 miles on a tank of gas and achieve a combined EPA city/highway rating of 40 mpg. Ford also touts a 1000-pound tow rating and acceleration comparable to that of a standard V6 Escape. HEV is expected to cost some $3000 more than that V6 model, in current dollars. No word yet as to when it hits dealers, but we'd expect it by next spring at the latest.

Insiders are also talking about an Escape-based "baby Sport Trac," a four-door SUV/pickup like the larger Explorer-based model. Though only a rumor as far as we know, the idea makes sense given the strong demand for both Escape and the bigger Sport Trac. No word yet on when or if this will appear, but one source says it could hit showrooms as early as the 2003 model year.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

XLT Sport Class Average
5 3.5

V6 models are among the quickest compact SUVs--8.9 sec 0-60 mph in our tests--with ample power for stress-free passing and merging, though some testers want more muscle on long upgrades. We have not tested the 4 cyl.
Fuel Economy

XLT Sport Class Average
5 4.8

Test AWD V6 Escapes averaged 18-19.2 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. Extended-use-test AWD V6 Tribute averaged 19.5 mpg over its 24,308-mi. test, which included lots of highway driving. We haven't had an opportunity to measure economy with the 4 cyl. Both engines use regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

XLT Sport Class Average
4 3.7

Escape and Tribute have different suspension tuning but both feel markedly taut, without wallow or float over dips and swells. Some sharp bumps can register abruptly.
Steering/Handling/Braking

XLT Sport Class Average
5 3.7

Better than most rivals. In fast cornering, balance and grip are quite good; body lean only moderate. Tribute has firmer steering than Escape, but it's exceptionally direct on both. Brakes have good stopping power, but some of our testers find nosedive excessive during rapid deceleration.
Quietness

XLT Sport Class Average
4 3.3

Noise levels aren't deal-breakers, but wind roar is prominent at speed, and the tires whine on coarse pavement. Escape seems marginally noisier than Tribute.
Controls

XLT Sport Class Average
5 4.8

Legible and generally well-placed. We have not yet tested the shorter steering-column-mounted automatic-transmission shift lever, but the original design's long, awkward lever interferes with the driver's reach to the radio. Ford-designed climate system doesn't allow independent control of air recirculation or air conditioning. Tribute interior feels slightly upscale of Escape's, but both are solid with attractive materials.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

XLT Sport Class Average
6 5

Taller riders may want more head room in sunroof-equipped models. But clearance is otherwise generous, and the airy, comfortable cabin belies the compact-SUV exterior dimensions. Driver view is unimpeded to sides and rear.
Room/Comfort (rear)

XLT Sport Class Average
5 3.7

More knee and foot room in this compact SUV than in many midsize SUVs. Rear bench is well-contoured even at inboard position. Floor is nearly flat, cabin wide enough for short-trip 3-adult comfort. Doorways are wide, but step-in is higher than most rivals'.
Cargo Room

XLT Sport Class Average
7 6.7

Generous. Rear seatbacks fold flat once the headrests are removed and the seat bottoms tilted forward. Standard separate-opening rear glass is an added convenience.
Value within Class

XLT Sport Class Average
10 5.4

Substantial-feeling, roomy, comfortable, even fun-to-drive, Escape and Tribute are compact-SUV all-stars. Priced in the mid-$20,000 range fully equipped, they're also sensible alternatives to any number of midsize SUVs, especially truck-based wagons less-efficient in their use of space and fuel.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
