Vehicle Highlights
Dodge's SUV gains optional curtain side airbags and a DVD entertainment system for 2002. Durango is sized between midsize and full-size SUVs and offers three rows of seats. A 4.7-liter V8 is standard on the base version, which is labeled Sport. A 5.9-liter V8 is optional on SLT models and standard on the Durango R/T. In a midyear change, a 5-speed automatic transmission replaced a 4-speed automatic as standard with the 4.7. The 5.9 continues with a 4-speed automatic. Durango is available with rear-wheel drive, 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement, or 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement; 4x4s include low-range gearing. Rear ABS is standard; 4-wheel ABS is optional.
Front bucket seats are standard, though the Sport can be ordered with a front bench. A 3-passenger 2nd-row bench seat is standard on all models, and a 3-passenger 3rd-row seat is standard on SLT models and the R/T for 8-passenger capacity. The new curtain side airbags cover the front and 2nd-row seats. The DVD rear-seat entertainment system is a dealer-installed option and is expected to cost about $1800, including installation.
COMPETITION
This is by far the hottest market segment right now. Crowded with more than 20 vehicles, midsize SUVs vary in size and type but nearly all seat five adults and offer V6 or V8 engines. Our Best Buys are the Acura MDX and Toyota Highlander. Both offer competence, convenience, and attractive pricing and design. They lack serious off-road 4WD systems, however.
Our Recommended choices feature more-traditional SUVs: the Dodge Durango, which offers optional third-row seating; the top-selling Ford Explorer; the utilitarian Nissan Xterra; and the refined GMC Envoy. If you don't venture off-road too far take a look at the car-based Lexus RX 300 as well.
