2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Full Review
Date Published: 3/14/08
2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Review
Special appearance packages are mid-2002 additions to this retro-styled 4-dr hatchback. PT Cruiser seats five, but its front passenger seat folds and the rear seat stows or removes for extra cargo room. Base, Touring, and Limited models are offered, all with a 150-hp 4-cyl engine and manual or optional automatic transmission. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes with traction control are optional. Front side airbags are standard on Limited, optional on others. Midyear additions are a "woodie" look via optional woodgrain body appliques, and 7500 editions of the Dream Cruiser Series 1 with exclusive Inca Gold paint complimented by matching alloy wheels and cabin trim. A CD player and underseat storage bin are now standard on Base models, the Limited gains adjustable driver lumbar support, and flame decals for the hood and front fenders are newly optional. Due this fall as a 2003 model is the 215-hp PT Turbo with 17-inch wheels, sport seats, and monotone exterior trim.
Competition
Not really a sport-utility or minivan, the PT Cruiser has been well received by our staff. It offers versatility and eye-catching styling not found among compact cars. Its only drawback is tepid acceleration. The loaded Volkswagen Passat also makes it to the Best Buy list this year, despite relatively high prices.

Recommended choices include the vanilla Mazda 626 and the all-wheel drive Subaru Outback/Legacy. Both offer roomy alternatives at fair prices.
News
Generating huge buzz long before it hit the streets, the PT Cruiser drew nearly 145,000 calendar-year sales in 2001, up 57.3 percent from debut 2000. Chrysler increased output at the PT's Mexican assembly plant to keep up, but has lately resorted to incentives, as the once red-hot sales pace has cooled somewhat. Many dealers have been offering their own discounts too.

But like Volkswagen with its New Beetle, Chrysler plans to keep PT sales cooking by serving up new variations in coming months. Following the new Dream Cruiser and "Woodie" limited editions is the 2003 PT Turbo, due later in 2002. It packs 215 horsepower, up 65 from regular PTs, plus firmer suspension, standard 17-inch wheels, performance tires, bigger brakes, body-color bumpers, and unique seats with longer cushions and more prominent side bolsters. There's still a choice of manual or automatic transmissions, but the latter includes Chrysler's AutoStick manual-shift feature. Chrysler claims 0-60 mph at 7.5 sec, which compares with the 8.9 sec we clocked with a five-speed non-turbo model. Pricing isn't available yet, but insider guesstimates speak of $25,000 to start.

The turbo engine should be the only choice for the recently announced Cruiser convertible that bows in early 2004, likely as an '05 model. Based on a well-received concept seen at the 2000 New York Auto Show, the drop-top PT will offer seating for four beneath a fixed "hoop" bridging the passenger compartment to restore some of the body rigidity that's always lost when a fixed-roof car is "decaptitated." The top will likely be manual (and bulky), and the reconfigured body won't have the cargo space or versatility of the PT wagon, but convertibles have never been about practicality anyway. We'll have more details as they become available, so keep checking back with us.

Another spin-off, a two-door panel wagon, is still said to be under consideration, though it's not official yet. However, the PT Cruiser's basic design should see no fundamental through the 2007 season, after which the crystal ball goes dark.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Touring, man. Limited, auto. Class Average
5 4 3.7

Fine for around-town cruising, but weak on hills or in highway passing. Manual-transmission models feel liveliest--0-60 mph in 8.9 sec with test 5-speed Touring--but automatic transmission is pretty responsive, despite some lurching during downshifts.
Fuel Economy

Touring, man. Limited, auto. Class Average
5 5 6.7

Automatic-transmission Cruisers averaged 18.5-23.0 mpg in our tests, manuals 18.3-22.1. Uses regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

Touring, man. Limited, auto. Class Average
6 6 4.1

Touring and Limited share suspension that's firmer than the base model's. It's comfortably controlled, except on washboard surfaces, where it tends to jiggle. Base model not made available for testing.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Touring, man. Limited, auto. Class Average
6 6 4.9

Solid and stable. Sixteen-inch tires provide good grip in turns. Fast corners induce noticeable body lean, but no top-heavy tippiness. Steering is responsive and appropriately assisted, though manual-transmission versions suffer mild torque steer--unwanted wandering--in fast acceleration from lower speeds. Available antilock 4-wheel discs furnish strong stopping power, good pedal feel.
Quietness

Touring, man. Limited, auto. Class Average
4 4 3.6

No noisier than the average compact car. Coarse pavement induces some road roar with the Touring/Limited-model tires, wind rush starts to intrude at 65 mph, and the engine, which never really sounds smooth, is coarse above 4000 rpm.
Controls

Touring, man. Limited, auto. Class Average
6 6 5.6

Retro-styled instrument panel has contemporary ease of use, though dashboard-mounted power-window switches are odd. Materials seem more upscale than Cruiser's price suggests. Clear outward sightlines, though rear headrests are minor obstructions.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Touring, man. Limited, auto. Class Average
7 7 4.4

High body build provides abundant head room even with sunroof. Seats are comfortably chair-height, and a power height adjustment for driver seat is available. Pull-down center armrest can interfere with manual-shift arm motion. And drivers with really long legs may wish seat would slide further back. Step-in is no higher than a typical car's.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Touring, man. Limited, auto. Class Average
6 6 3.2

Same chair-height stance as front; 6-footers are comfortable and uncrowded in outboard positions. Enough room for a rear center-seater with a little crowding.
Cargo Room

Touring, man. Limited, auto. Class Average
7 7 3.3

Generous and versatile, especially with available fold-flat front passenger seat. Modest space behind rear seat. But the 65/35 split bench folds and removes as in minivans and SUVs to create a tall, wide cargo bay.
Value within Class

Touring, man. Limited, auto. Class Average
9 9 4.7

The Cruiser is roomy, comfortable, adaptable, and fun, with mediocre acceleration its only real flaw. This little wagon is affordable too, and softening demand finally means some discounts and shorter delivery times for popularly equipped versions.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
