2002 BMW 5-Series Review
BMW's midrange line makes few changes pending release of redesigned models for 2003. The 525i sedan and wagon use a 2.5-liter inline 6-cyl engine, the 530i sedan a 3.0 version. The 540i sedan and wagon have a 4.4-liter V8 with 290 hp, up 8 hp from last year. The high-performance M5 sedan comes only with a 4.9-liter V8 and manual transmission. Other models offer manual or automatic with standard or extra-cost manual shift gate. All 5s include an antiskid system, front side airbags, and front head-protecting tubular airbags. Rear torso and head-protecting side airbags are standard on the M5 and optional on other models. All 2002 5-Series cars get a standard in-dash CD player, 6-cyl models add a standard power passenger seat, and 525s replace manual climate control with automatic.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range and obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $44,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. The refined Lexus LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at just under $55,000. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
BMW's number-two U.S. seller posted a near 4-percent calendar-year sales gain for 2000 to just over 39,700. The economy then started crumbling, but the 5-Series held its ground, scoring an additional 302 sales in 2001, a gain of less than 1 percent.

A redesigned 5-Series is being prepped for what should be an early-2003 U.S. launch, perhaps as an '04 model. Recent spy photographs of late prototype sedans reveal styling like that of the new 7-Series flagship, but slightly more conservative, especially at the rear. The next 5 reportedly shares many new 7-Series features, including available 6-speed automatic transmission and, as an option for some models, BMW's "i-Drive" control for audio, climate, navigation and other functions. Engines will be upgraded with BMW's Valvetronic variable-valve-timing system. Insiders say the 2.5-liter six will go to about 195 hp, the 3.0-liter to 230, and the 4.4-liter V8 to around 300. Per BMW's usual practice in renewing a model line, sedans will bow first; wagons and a new high-performance M5 sedan follow a year or so later. Rumors say the M5 will pack around 450 hp and may be offered in a first-time wagon version.

Expected to be unveiled by April 2003 is a luxury sports coupe reviving the 6-Series badge last used in 1989. It should arrive in the U.S. as a 2004 model, followed by a companion cabriolet convertible for '05. Both these 2-drs use a shortened version of the new 5-Series platform, but engines may be limited to base and high-tune V8s. Recent spy shots of late prototypes show well-formed styling with a sharply sloped coupe roofline, a relatively large wheel/tire package, and a low, wide BMW "twin-kidney" grille.

Acceleration

525iT, auto. 530i, man. 540i sdn, man. M5 Class Average
5 7 8 9 6.2

Quick cars all, though price rises with performance. Test manual-shift 530i did 0-60 mph in 6.7 sec. An automatic 525 wagon showed surprising all-around verve. The potent 540s needed about 6.5 sec in last year's tests, but may be a little faster now. We clocked an M5 at just 5 sec.
Fuel Economy

525iT, auto. 530i, man. 540i sdn, man. M5 Class Average
4 5 4 2 4.6

Test automatic-transmission 525i wagon averaged 17.4 mpg, a manual 530i 21.0. Last year's 540i sedan returned 15.9 with automatic, 19.3 with manual; a wagon got 18.7. Test M5 averaged 13.8. All require premium gas.
Ride Quality

525iT, auto. 530i, man. 540i sdn, man. M5 Class Average
9 10 9 7 7.2

Absorbent, unflustered in any model. M5 and manual 540s are firm but not teeth-rattling on bumpy surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

525iT, auto. 530i, man. 540i sdn, man. M5 Class Average
8 8 9 10 6.7

Despite 6-cyl models' moderate body lean in hard cornering, all 5s have responsive steering and assured, athletic moves. Standard antiskid system enhances stability, but traction still compromised on wet or slippery surfaces, especially with Sport Package tires. Braking exceptionally swift, stable, consistent.
Quietness

525iT, auto. 530i, man. 540i sdn, man. M5 Class Average
7 7 7 6 6.8

Not Lexus-grade hushed, but minor tire roar on very coarse surfaces is the only annoyance.
Controls

525iT, auto. 530i, man. 540i sdn, man. M5 Class Average
6 5 5 5 6.3

Mostly handy and intuitive. Combined audio/climate/trip-computer setup might stump Bill Gates. First-rate cabin materials and workmanship.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

525iT, auto. 530i, man. 540i sdn, man. M5 Class Average
8 8 8 8 7

Spacious; head room good even with sunroof. Longer cushions could improve otherwise supportive seats. Power seat and tilt/telescope steering wheel allow most drivers to find a comfortable long-haul posture.
Room/Comfort (rear)

525iT, auto. 530i, man. 540i sdn, man. M5 Class Average
6 6 6 6 5.4

Too narrow for three adults, but leg, knee room tight only with front seats fully aft. Again, more thigh support would add to already-good seat comfort.
Cargo Room

525iT, auto. 530i, man. 540i sdn, man. M5 Class Average
7 3 3 3 4.2

Sedans have narrow but roomy trunks. Wagon volume good but not great, though superior to that of BMW's X5 SUVs. Split folding rear seats standard on wagons, optional on sedans.
Value within Class

525iT, auto. 530i, man. 540i sdn, man. M5 Class Average
7 8 7 3 5.1

For premium engineering and superior road manners, we recommend any 5-Series model you can afford. BMW's strong resale values help offset stiff sticker prices.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
NA = price note available, NC = no charge.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test BMW 5-Series 4-door sedan BMW 5-Series 4-door wagon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
