2002 Audi TT Review
Audi's retro-look TT comes as a 4-seat hatchback coupe and a 2-seat convertible. Both have a turbo 4-cyl engine in two states of tune. The 180-hp version uses a 5-speed manual transmission, the 225-hp variant teams with a 6-speed manual. Automatic transmission is unavailable. The base 180-hp models come with front-wheel drive and traction control. Quattro all-wheel drive is available for the 180-hp coupe and is standard on 225-hp models. An antiskid system and rear spoiler are standard on all. The 180-hp models have 16-inch wheels, 225-hp TTs have 17s. A power top is standard on 225-hp convertibles and optional for 180-hp convertibles; both have a heated glass rear window. Added midyear to mark Audi's participation in American LeMans Series racing were 1000 limited-production 225-hp ALMS coupes with 18-inch wheels and special trim. Also new for 2002 is a new radio with in-dash CD.
Competition
This class features an interesting mix of hard-core performance models and more luxurious touring convertibles. Our Best Buys give you a little of both worlds. The Chevrolet Corvette is fast, comfortable, and reasonably affordable. Unlike previous models it doesn't beat you up with a hard ride, and it will cruise quietly at highway speeds. Our other Best Buy, the Mazda Miata, is a bare-bones roadster with few frills and average acceleration, but for weekend fun on a twisty back road it's hard to beat.

Audi's TT is solid, stylish, and loaded with features making it fit for the Recommended list. Like no other in its class, TT offers the all-weather advantage of available quattro AWD at a great price. Of course, if you don't mind spending a few more bucks, we recommend you take a look at the Mercedes-Benz SLK. The Mercedes offers an interesting mix of performance and luxury. It also has a retractable hardtop, making it more of an all-weather car.
News
U.S. TT sales were just over 12,000 units in calendar 2000 and some 12,500 in 2001. But coupe orders dropped a whopping 30.6 percent in the first half of 2002, and though we don't have comparable cabriolet figures, it's doubtful that model made up the difference.

Like its corporate sister, the VW New Beetle, the TT is a "fashion" car designed as much for raising nameplate profile as raising profits. But fashions change all too quickly--just ask Chrysler about recent PT Cruiser sales. Then too, the TT has largely accomplished its original image-polishing mission. So does Audi really need it anymore? Intriguingly, industry moles have lately voiced doubts about a "next" TT. Even if there is one, they say, it's still two years away at least. Earlier, Audi was said to be prepping two new versions of the current car: a 265-hp turbo 4-cyl "TTS" and a 300-hp V6, both with quattro all-wheel drive, upgraded suspension, and special trim. But we've heard nothing lately about either proposal--nor, come to think of it, about a TT redesign. So we'll just have to haul out an old chestnut and say, stay tuned.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base conv 2WD 225-hp cpe Class Average
6 7 7.8

Slight turbo lag dulls acceleration in most situations, though the 225-hp models scoot impressively once boost is up. Test 180-hp coupe did 0-60 mph in 7.4 sec. Test 225-hp Quattro coupe took 6.2 sec-- swift but not scorching.
Fuel Economy

Base conv 2WD 225-hp cpe Class Average
7 6 4.6

TT's require premium gas. Test front-drive models averaged 24.5-29.8 mpg, 225-hp Quattro coupes 19.1-23.4 mpg.
Ride Quality

Base conv 2WD 225-hp cpe Class Average
3 3 4

Firm damping, so TTs jolt over potholes and tar strips and jiggle a bit on freeways. Still, not uncomfortable for a sports car.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base conv 2WD 225-hp cpe Class Average
8 10 8.3

Great twisty-road runner, aided by precise steering, minimal body lean, strong grip--Quattros especially--and confident braking. Quattro's wider tires follow longitudinal pavement grooves too readily, though.
Quietness

Base conv 2WD 225-hp cpe Class Average
2 2 3.6

Prominent exhaust noise, marked tire roar on some surfaces. Convertible's power retractable-glass windbreak reduces top-down cockpit turbulence at higher speeds, but it's still noisier than the coupe.
Controls

Base conv 2WD 225-hp cpe Class Average
6 6 5.3

Design and layout imaginative yet user-friendly, but sun (or cold) can make alloy shift knob too hot (or too chilly) for comfort. Cabin materials are delightfully stylish and of high quality.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base conv 2WD 225-hp cpe Class Average
3 3 5.1

Narrow footwells, but no shortage of head clearance for up to 6-footers. Low body build impedes entry/exit but not driver positioning or visibility, though vision not great top-up in convertible.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base conv 2WD 225-hp cpe Class Average
0 1 .6

Only coupes have a rear seat, and it's little more than a padded cubby, not even fit for toddlers.
Cargo Room

Base conv 2WD 225-hp cpe Class Average
1 6 2.1

Coupes stow a couple's weekend luggage even with the split rear seatbacks up. Convertible's trunk is teensy. High liftover in all TTs.
Value within Class

Base conv 2WD 225-hp cpe Class Average
7 8 4.2

We recommend the TT based on its solidity, style, features, and road manners. Most rival sports cars with swifter acceleration cost thousands more, and none in this price range have the all-weather advantage of the TT's available quattro AWD.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Side Impact, Driver NA 5
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
