2002 Audi A8 Review
A new radio with in-dash 6-disc changer, a "Sport" setting for the transmission, and new wheels mark 2002 versions of Audi's flagship line. The A8, high-performance S8, and the longer-body A8L all have aluminum-intensive construction and a V8 engine; the A8 and A8L get 310 hp, the S8 360. A 5-speed automatic transmission and Audi's quattro all-wheel drive are also standard, along with front and rear side airbags and curtain side airbags. New safety features for '02 include an in-trunk emergency release and an optional tire-pressure-monitoring system. A navigation system, heated front and rear seats, and rear sunshades are standard on the L, optional on base and S8. The optional Acoustic Parking System warns of obstacles front and rear. Eighteen-inch wheels are included on the S8 and optional on other A8s vs. standard 17s. Likewise, Xenon headlamps. The S8 also has a sport suspension, special trim, and power front sport seats. OnStar assistance became available midyear, and can be enhanced with extra-cost in-car e-mail service.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range and obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $44,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. The refined Lexus LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at just under $55,000. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
A8 sales were just 2362 in 2000 and exactly 2300 in calendar '01. A mere 747 were retailed in the first half of 2002, a sizeable 38.3 percent year-to-year drop. As ever, the A8 is at a price disadvantage against class rivals due to its expensive, aluminum-intensive construction. And it's a much older design, dating from 1994.

An all-new A8 is due to reach U.S. dealers by summer 2004, perhaps as an early '05 model. That's a year behind sister VW's big new Phaeton luxury sedan, which uses the same basic design. A higher-peformance S8 should be on our roads by mid-2005.

Looking like a larger version of Audi's middle-size A6 sedan, the new A8 features a stronger but lighter aluminum space-frame structure and a lighter quattro all-wheel-drive system with reduced internal friction for better performance and mileage. Standard and long-wheelbase A8L models stick with a 4.2-liter V8, but standard horsepower goes up by 20 to 330, torque by 8 lb-ft to 310. A new 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual shift feature replaces today's 5-speed unit. Also newly standard are air suspension and 17-inch wheels (vs 16s). One source says 18- and 19-inch wheels will be optional. Finally, the next A8 introduces "Multi-Media Interface," Audi's answer to the modern luxury-car problem of how to control a growing gaggle of features--audio, climate, phone, navigation--without undue driver distraction. We haven't yet seen it, but we can only hope it's less distracting than BMW's "i-Drive" or Mercedes' equally daunting COMAND system.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base A8L S8 Class Average
7 7 8 6.5

Test A8L clocked 7.1 sec 0-60 mph, good for a big, heavy sedan. Test S8 needed just 6.4 sec. All models furnish strong midrange punch, aided by silky, responsive automatic transmission.
Fuel Economy

Base A8L S8 Class Average
5 5 3 4.2

Above average for the class. Test A8s averaged 19-20 mpg. One test S8 averaged 18.4 mpg, a second example 15.1. All require premium fuel.
Ride Quality

Base A8L S8 Class Average
9 10 8 8

Both A8s smother bumps as well as other German luxury cars, so they're very easy riders. S8's sport suspension and high-speed tires deliver a firmer but still-comfortable ride.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base A8L S8 Class Average
8 8 8 6.6

A8s aren't quite BMW-nimble, but they're plenty grippy and predictable, with class-exclusive AWD for all-weather traction. S8 matches any rival for athletic handling. All feel better-planted at high speed than some competitors, and have powerful, effective brakes.
Quietness

Base A8L S8 Class Average
8 8 7 7.5

Always hushed except for mild tire drone on coarse pavement.
Controls

Base A8L S8 Class Average
5 5 5 5.3

Mostly good, but Audi's navigation system is more cryptic than most and does without a video-type display. Complex climate controls mounted too low. Steering wheel has buttons for manual shifting of automatic transmission, plus audio and phone functions. Interior design and materials befit premium pricing and are class benchmarks, though one test S8 had a mild, persistent creaking noise in its driver door.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base A8L S8 Class Average
8 8 8 7.8

Enough space for very tall occupants on firm seats, though lateral bolstering is mediocre on A8/A8L. Drivers have ample position adjustments, generally clear sightlines out.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base A8L S8 Class Average
8 10 8 7

A8/S8 are shy on rear leg room and seat width vs. BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class, but A8L, which accounts for 85 percent of A8 line's sales, is more than a match.
Cargo Room

Base A8L S8 Class Average
6 6 6 4.9

Ample, despite bulky side panels. Plenty of in-cabin stowage too, though dashboard glovebox is small.
Value within Class

Base A8L S8 Class Average
3 4 3 4.6

Any A8 is a very satisfying drive, and the S8 is truly special. AWD and aluminum-intensive construction drive up prices, but help distinguish these cars as alternatives for the well-heeled enthusiast.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
