2002 Audi A6/allroad quattro Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2002 Audi A6/allroad quattro Review
The less-expensive of Audi's two luxury lines gets revised styling, a larger V6 engine, and a continuously variable automatic transmission for 2002. A6 comes as a sedan, wagon, or the high-riding allroad wagon. The 3.0 sedan and Avant wagon replace last year's 2.8 models and have a 220-hp 3.0-liter V6 instead of a 200-hp 2.8 V6. The turbo V6 2.7T and V8 4.2 sedans return, as does the allroad quattro--an SUV-inspired AWD wagon with the 2.7T engine and height-adjustable suspension. New for '02 is the S6 Avant with a 340-hp 4.2 V8, sport suspension and tires, and aluminum exterior trim. The 3.0 sedan comes with front-wheel drive or quattro AWD; all other models come with quattro. Front side airbags, curtain side airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, and antiskid system are standard. Rear side airbags are optional. A 6-speed manual transmission is available on the 2.7T. A 5-speed automatic with manual shift gate is optional on the 2.7T and standard on other A6s except the front-drive 3.0. That model uses a continuously variable automatic transmission. Like other CVTs, it furnishes variable drive ratios instead of conventional gears, but it also offers six manual-shift ratios accessed via a separate shift gate. Leather upholstery is standard on V8 models, optional elsewhere. All '02 A6s get an in-dash 6-disc CD changer, new front- and rear-appearance touches, and revised dashboards. OnStar assistance became available midyear, and can be enhanced with extra-cost in-car e-mail service.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range and obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $44,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. The refined Lexus LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at just under $55,000. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
After almost matching the entry-level A4s in calendar 2000 sales, the A6 line dropped 13.5 percent in 2001 and was off 11.8 percent year-to-year in the first half of '02. As with some other near-luxury cars these days, A6 sales are doubtless affected by Wall Street spasms, which have left many would-be buyers feeling poorer on paper if not in fact.

Even so, Audi plows ahead with a new high-performance A6 model, the RS6 sedan. It arrives next May with a twin-turbocharged and intercooled 4.2-liter V8 producing no less than 450 hp. Developed by Audi's in-house quattro performance division, the AWD RS6 is claimed to do 0-60 mph in just 4.6 sec. Top speed is electronically governed to 155 mph. Besides ESP traction/antiskidcontrol and larger ABS brakes, the RS6 introduces Audi's Dynamic Ride Control in which auto-adjusting shock absorbers are connected diagonally--left front to right rear, right front to left rear--so as to reduce body lean and pitch in hard cornering. Other features include 5-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift "paddle" controls on the steering wheel, plus unique 9-spoke 18-inch wheels, 255/40ZR performance tires, new lower fascias at each end, decklid spoiler, specific interior trim, tire-pressure monitor, Xenon headlamps, front/rear obstacle detection, plus most features of the regular A6 4.2 model. Options are few: navigation system, OnStar communications, rear side airbags, and carbon-fiber cabin accents. Price has yet to be announced, but an $81,000 base is being whispered. That alone would insure exclusivity, but sales will be limited to a maximum of only 850 through December '03--period. The RS6 then goes away, kept out of the U.S. by several arcane regulations. But if you miss out, don't be too upset. According to one executive recently quoted in AutoWeek magazine, the RS6 is not the last super-performance Audi destined for these shores.

Other models should see no major change until the A6's next complete overhaul, now forecast for 2004-05. No word yet on what will be involved.

Acceleration

3.0 quattro sdn, auto. 2.7T w/ Sport Pkg., man. allroad quattro, man. S6 Class Average
6 7 6 8 6.2

All slightly lazy off the line, but gather speed rapidly. The 3.0 and 2.7T come alive over 3000 rpm. V8s are robust. Haven't timed 3.0, but test 2.7T and 4.2 ran 0-60 mpg in 7.0 sec; test allroad in just under 8. CVT sharpens throttle response at high engine speeds vs. conventional automatic, which some of our testers found tardy in its shifting. Manual transmission suffers long throws.
Fuel Economy

3.0 quattro sdn, auto. 2.7T w/ Sport Pkg., man. allroad quattro, man. S6 Class Average
5 6 4 3 4.6

In mostly highway driving, test 3.0 quattro sedan averaged 20.9 mpg, 4.2 averaged 18.4. Test allroads averaged 15.1-17.2. Test manual-transmission 2.7T averaged 22 mpg. Haven't measured CVT yet, but Audi says it's more fuel efficient than conventional automatic. Audi recommends premium fuel for all.
Ride Quality

3.0 quattro sdn, auto. 2.7T w/ Sport Pkg., man. allroad quattro, man. S6 Class Average
8 7 6 5 7.2

Base and allroad suspensions provide typical Teutonic composure, but low-speed bumps come through and there's a trace of high-speed float. The 2.7T and V8 models are firm and quite firm, respectively; 4.2 and S6 are eminently stable at speed.
Steering/Handling/Braking

3.0 quattro sdn, auto. 2.7T w/ Sport Pkg., man. allroad quattro, man. S6 Class Average
7 7 6 8 6.7

V8s have satisfyingly firm steering (S6 is superb); other A6s feel accurate, if occasionally feeling slightly overassisted off-center. Quattro improves grip and response on all surfaces, but handling is an asset with any A6, despite more-than-expected tire squealing in tight, fast turns. Stopping power, now with standard brake-assist, is smooth and strong.
Quietness

3.0 quattro sdn, auto. 2.7T w/ Sport Pkg., man. allroad quattro, man. S6 Class Average
7 6 7 5 6.8

V6s muted, V8s growl, but both refined. Wind noise occasionally louder than warranted at these prices; same for road noise, particularly with Z-rated 17-inch tires.
Controls

3.0 quattro sdn, auto. 2.7T w/ Sport Pkg., man. allroad quattro, man. S6 Class Average
8 8 8 8 6.3

Large, legible gauges, and central instrument pod conveniently displays audio settings, outside temperature, mpg data. Driver must look from road to find low-set climate system, but its buttons are distinctly marked, readouts are bright and clear. Cruise control awkwardly embedded in turn-signal stalk. Contemporary cabin design has highest-grade materials and assembly.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

3.0 quattro sdn, auto. 2.7T w/ Sport Pkg., man. allroad quattro, man. S6 Class Average
8 8 8 8 7

Comfortable, supportive seats, adjustable padded center armrest. Standard tilt/telescope steering wheel is powered on 4.2 and S6, and available heated. Unimpeded outward visibility. Available Xenon headlamps have Xenon high-beams that project a quarter-mile.
Room/Comfort (rear)

3.0 quattro sdn, auto. 2.7T w/ Sport Pkg., man. allroad quattro, man. S6 Class Average
7 7 7 7 5.4

As in front, doors open wide to nicely contoured, not-overly firm seats. Generous knee, toe room. Head clearance for those up to 6-ft-1. Wagons lack rear cupholders.
Cargo Room

3.0 quattro sdn, auto. 2.7T w/ Sport Pkg., man. allroad quattro, man. S6 Class Average
6 6 7 7 4.2

Large sedan trunk has wide opening, nonintrusive strut hinges, handy grocery hooks. Wagons expansive. All rear seatbacks fold 60/40. All doors have cloth-lined map pockets.
Value within Class

3.0 quattro sdn, auto. 2.7T w/ Sport Pkg., man. allroad quattro, man. S6 Class Average
9 7 6 3 5.1

A6's distinctive blend of spaciousness, performance, design sophistication, and powertrain choice is unique among luxury cars. Prices generally run below those of directly competing models, though parent Volkswagen's own Passat W8 overlaps some A6 territory, and at lower prices.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
