2002 Audi A4 Review
Audi's least-expensive car line is redesigned for 2002. The new A4 grows slightly inside and out and offers a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The 1.8T sedan and Avant wagon have a 170-hp turbo 4-cyl engine. The 3.0 sedan and Avant have a V6 with 220 hp, a gain of 30 hp. Audi's quattro all-wheel drive is standard on Avants and available on sedans in place of front-wheel drive. Quattros account for the bulk of A4 sales and use manual transmission or a conventional 5-speed automatic. The CVT comes only on front-drive sedans, where it's optional in the 1.8T and standard with the V6. It furnishes variable drive ratios instead of conventional gears, and also has six 'manual-shift' ratios accessed via a separate shift gate. All models come with antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and an antiskid system. Front side airbags and curtain side airbags are standard; rear side airbags are optional. A navigation system, rear-obstacle warning, and a Sport package with 17-inch wheels are also offered. OnStar assistance became available midyear, and can be enhanced with extra-cost in-car e-mail service. A redesigned convertible A4 bows in fall 2002 as an '03 model.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has two clear benchmarks; the Acura TL and Lexus ES 300. Both succeed in blending comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. ES 300 offers a little more luxury and TL, with it's Type-S, a bit more sport.

We Recommend the sporty and Euro-flavored BMW 3-Series as a rear-drive alternative. The "3" has enough bodystyles and engine choices to suit anyone. At the other end of the near-luxury spectrum is the posh and comfortable Buick Park Avenue--an old-school luxo-cruiser from Detroit.
News
After scoring a 7-percent sales gain in calendar 2000, Audi's volume leader rose another 3.7 percent in 2001 and ran 19.3 percent ahead of that pace for the first half of 2002. Assuming the stock market steadies along with buyers' nerves, A4 sales should get a further boost from the redesigned Avant wagons launched in early 2002 and the 2003 A4 Cabriolet.

The new ragtop rides the same wheelbase as other A4s, but is slightly longer and wider. Two versions will be offered: a 220-hp 3.0-liter V6 model and, a bit later, a less costly turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cyl edition with 170 hp. Both are front-drivers with Audi's Multitronic continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), plus the usual electronic brake and suspension assists, front side airbags, an insulated power top with glass rear window. Options should include a Sport Package with firm suspension, 17-inch wheels (vs 16s) and high-performance tires. The V6 Cabriolet is available with navigation system, Bose audio, and parking-assist warning system, among other extras. It goes on sale this fall; the 1.8T version follows in spring '03. Audi hopes its new convertibles will generate 7000-10,000 U.S. sales per year.

Expected later in '03 are a new-design high-performance S4 sedan and Avant, which may be launched as early '04 entries. They'll continue with twin turbochargers, but on the latest 3.0-liter V6, resulting in a gain of 50 hp to around 300 total.

About 85 percent of A4s are quattro equipped and, with the 4-cyl engine and automatic transmission, can feel slightly underpowered. Manual-transmission 1.8Ts are lively enough, and manual-transmission V6 quattros are satisfyingly quick, especially above 40 mph. The lighter front-drive models feel spry with any transmission. Test 1.8T with CVT did 0-60 mph in 8.6 sec. CVT acts much like a conventional automatic, and more readily delivers passing power. Like A4's 5-speed automatic, the CVT has steering wheel buttons for manual selection of gear ratios.
Fuel Economy

1.8T Avant w/Sport, man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 1.8T sdn w/quattro, auto. 3.0 sdn w/quattro, Sport, man. Class Average
6 5 5 5 5.1

Test manual-transmission V6 quattro sedans averaged 18.3-21 mpg, depending on driving conditions. Test manual-transmission 1.8T Avant averaged 21.5 mpg. CVT 1.8T sedan averaged 20.9, including gas-eating performance tests. Audi says CVT is 10 percent more fuel efficient than a conventional automatic. Audi recommends premium fuel for all.
Ride Quality

Standard suspension furnishes firm control, great bump absorption on most any surface. Stiffer Sport-Package setup with low-profile 17-inch tires feels less forgiving over broken pavement, but isn't punishing.
Steering/Handling/Braking

1.8T Avant w/Sport, man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 1.8T sdn w/quattro, auto. 3.0 sdn w/quattro, Sport, man. Class Average
7 7 7 7 6.9

A joy to drive quickly, and Sport-Package models relish challenging roads. Quattro gives all-weather advantage over 2WD competitors. Wonderful steering is nicely weighted and direct. Brakes are strong with outstanding pedal modulation.
Quietness

1.8T Avant w/Sport, man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 1.8T sdn w/quattro, auto. 3.0 sdn w/quattro, Sport, man. Class Average
6 7 7 6 5.7

Pleasant engine sounds: both powerplants purr at cruise, and V6 snarls nicely under full throttle. Noisy low-profile 17-inch tires excepted, road rumble is muted, so what wind rush there is gets noticed.
Controls

1.8T Avant w/Sport, man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 1.8T sdn w/quattro, auto. 3.0 sdn w/quattro, Sport, man. Class Average
8 8 8 8 6.3

Clearly marked controls, large, well-lit gauges. However, dual-zone automatic climate controls are overly complex, and one test A4 had difficulty maintaining the set temperature. Front center armrest blocks use of handbrake lever and console cupholder. Sophisticated cabin materials and design are class benchmarks. Fuel gauge on one test A4 would not read more than two-thirds full.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

1.8T Avant w/Sport, man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 1.8T sdn w/quattro, auto. 3.0 sdn w/quattro, Sport, man. Class Average
7 7 7 7 6

Firm seats with ample head and leg room, though wide central console cuts into knee space enough to annoy taller drivers. And some may find lower cushions a bit narrow. Outside mirrors could be larger, but visibility good to all directions. Available rear-obstacle-warning system a useful feature and a near-luxury class rarity.
Room/Comfort (rear)

1.8T Avant w/Sport, man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 1.8T sdn w/quattro, auto. 3.0 sdn w/quattro, Sport, man. Class Average
4 4 4 4 3.8

Supportive, nicely contoured seat. Head and leg room not expansive, but compare to similarly sized class competitors. Two adults the comfort limit.
Cargo Room

1.8T Avant w/Sport, man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 1.8T sdn w/quattro, auto. 3.0 sdn w/quattro, Sport, man. Class Average
6 3 3 3 4.2

Relatively small opening to sedan's large trunk frustrates loading of large objects, but split folding rear seatbacks compensate some, and strut-type lid hinges don't eat into cargo space. Avant is a versatile little hauler and features several handy cargo bins and nets.

The A4 matches or beats many near-luxury competitors in refinement, performance, and features. BMW and Jaguar offer AWD, but no rival has the impressive new CVT.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
