ACCELERATION
| 3.2 CL | Type-S w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 7 | 7.8 |
Test Type-S did 0-60 mph in 6.7 sec. Base model slightly slower, but both CLs have brisk pickup from most any speed, helped by smooth, alert transmission.
FUEL ECONOMY
| 3.2 CL | Type-S w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 5 | 4.6 |
We averaged 19.5-23 mpg with two Type-S test models; note that base CL has identical EPA mileage ratings. Acura recommends premium fuel in both models.
RIDE QUALITY
| 3.2 CL | Type-S w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 5 | 4 |
Firm but comfortable, though Type-S shows moderate jiggle and tire slap on corrugated freeways.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| 3.2 CL | Type-S w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 8 | 8.3 |
Predictable and safe, yet crisp and responsive. Good cornering grip bolstered on Type-S by standard antiskid system. Braking swift and stable in most any situation.
QUIETNESS
| 3.2 CL | Type-S w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 3.6 |
Little wind noise. Tire thrum noticed only on coarse pavement. Refined V6s rise to a subdued, pleasant snarl in hard acceleration.
CONTROLS
| 3.2 CL | Type-S w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 6 | 5.3 |
CL shares well-designed TL sedan dashboard, so standard climate controls a bit distant for some drivers. Navigation system controls a few climate functions, takes learning, and can distract drivers. Top notch workmanship and interior materials--including standard leather upholstery.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| 3.2 CL | Type-S w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 5.1 |
Supportive, well-shaped seats and plenty of space, though taller folk have limited head room. Fine driving stance, clear visibility all-around.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| 3.2 CL | Type-S w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | .6 |
Cramped bucket-type seating for two only--preferably preteens. Entry/exit typical coupe crouch-and-crawl, though front seats power forward on tipping their backrests, which helps a little.
CARGO ROOM
| 3.2 CL | Type-S w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 2.1 |
Good by coupe standards, but sickle-shaped trunklid hinges steal space and the narrow pass-through isn't as useful as folding back seats, which aren't available.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| 3.2 CL | Type-S w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 4.2 |
The CL lacks the outright agility of a BMW 3-Series coupe, but its brisk acceleration, controlled ride, and responsive handling should please even demanding drivers. And like the TL sedan on which it's based, the CL is very well equipped for the money.
