2001 Toyota Celica Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2001 Toyota Celica Review
Toyota's sporty 4-cyl hatchback coupes come as the 140-hp GT model and the sportier 180-hp GT-S. GT comes with a 5-speed manual transmission, the GT-S with a 6-speed. Automatic is optional for both and provides the GT-S with steering-wheel buttons for manual shifting. ABS and front side airbags are optional, as is a power sunroof and rear spoiler. GT-S options include leather upholstery and 16-inch wheels instead of 15s.
Competition
The current Honda Prelude has been around for a few years but it has plenty of power, excellent road manners, and gets reasonable fuel economy. If Prelude is a little too expensive, take a look at our other Best Buy the Volkswagen New Beetle. It offers interesting styling and a nice mix of comfort, performance, and economy.

If raw performance is what you are after we Recommend the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, and Pontiac Firebird. Not as pleasant to live with on a daily basis, these cars offer a lot of bang for your buck. New last year, the fun-to-drive Toyota Celica also earns the Recommended nod with its reputation for reliability.
News
Celica sales skyrocketed over threefold in calendar 2000, rising to some 52,400. That kind of success is hard to argue with, though we respectfully disagree with some of Toyota's thinking in the 2000-model redesign.

Having been so recently reinvented, Celica shouldn't see any fundamental change for the next 3-4 years. But Toyota needs to keep buyers interested, so we still think it likely that Celica will get a performance-boosting turbocharger or supercharger option at some point. We'd also expect the usual yearly styling tweaks and a "midlife facelift" around 2003.

Acceleration

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
6 7 5.7

Engines are decently peppy, but only if revved like mad. Manual-transmission models are naturally livelier than automatics, though our automatic-transmission test GT delivered adequate power as long as it wasn't climbing a long upgrade.
Fuel Economy

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
8 6 6.1

Test manual-transmission GT-S averaged 24.2 mpg on the required premium fuel. GT uses regular; automatic-transmission test model's average of 30.3 mpg was helped by a long highway trip.
Ride Quality

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
4 4 3.5

Firm and busy on most surfaces, though more annoying than uncomfortable.
Steering/Handling/Braking

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
7 7 6.8

Agile and fun, abetted by sharp, responsive steering and flat, grippy cornering moves. Routine braking on our two test cars was fine with ABS, which should be standard on cars like this, not optional.
Quietness

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
3 3 3.2

Engines are pretty noisy even in gentle cruising and coarse-surface tire roar is high, so long trips can be wearing.
Controls

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
6 6 5.6

A sporty driving ambience with mostly simple, handy controls and great shifter/wheel/pedal spacing, but the tachometer and warning lights aren't well placed for easy viewing.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
3 3 4.3

Swoopy styling also impedes over-the-shoulder visibility for drivers. Excellent seats but limited space for even moderately tall occupants despite racecar-low positioning.
Room/Comfort (rear)

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
1 1 1.5

Only toddlers need try riding here, and even they might grunt and groan during entry/exit.
Cargo Room

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
5 5 3

Not much without folding the split rear seatback. Hatch opens reasonably low, but bulky boxes won't fit beneath it, and the load floor is irregular in shape.
Value within Class

GT, auto. GT-S, man. Class Average
6 7 4.6

More for Gen-X hotbloods than Baby Boomers, who'll find Mitsubishi's Eclipse a more relaxing drive. But Toyota's reputation for quality, reliability, and high resale value boost Celica's appeal for buyers of all ages.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
