2001 Toyota Camry/Solara Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2001 Toyota Camry/Solara Review
Toyota's midsize Camry sedans and Solara coupes and convertibles share a basic platform and 4-cyl and V6 powerteams, but differ in appearance and features availability. All offer optional front side airbags; V6 models come with ABS and rear disc brakes instead of drums. ABS is optional for 4-cyl models. Solaras are essentially unchanged for 2001. New Gallery Series Camry package dresses up mid-range LE sedans with 2-tone paint, special cloth interior, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, other trim details. Base Camry CEs now have 15-inch wheels and a full-size spare tire instead of 14s and a space-saver spare.
Competition
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan forms, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced.

Recommended models include the smooth Chevrolet Impala, the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, the sporty Nissan Maxima, surprising Olds Intrigue, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. We've also added the Ford Taurus and clone Mercury Sable to our Recommended list.
News
For the third year running, Camry claimed title as America's most popular car line with calendar-2000 sales of nearly 423,000, including Solara coupes and convertibles. However, that represented a 5.6-percent decline from 1999, reflecting a continued general softening in midsize car sales as more and more buyers desert the segment, mainly for compact and midsize SUVs. By contrast, runner-up Honda Accord was essentially flat, while third-place Ford Taurus was up slightly but still well behind its Japanese-brand rivals.

Camry sales may spark this fall with release of redesigned 2002 sedans. The counterpart ES 300 at luxury division Lexus shares the new basic architecture and powertrain updates wrapped in different styling and packaged with more standard features.

Toyota always plays new-model cards very close to the corporate vest, but we can tell you that the '02 Camry has a sharper, more dynamic look than the outgoing design, with a profile and proportions reminiscent of the Cadillac Seville, believe it or not. Exterior dimensions don't appear greatly changed, judging by the one photo we've seen, but Toyota will likely eke out a little extra passenger and cargo space. Few other specifics are confirmed, but one industry source says Camry's 4-cyl engine will be punched out to 2.4 liters for around 150-160 hp. Also mooted are new cylinder heads that eliminate the need for periodic valve adjustments on both the 4-cyl and V6, an area where Toyota has lagged behind many rivals.

The 2-dr Solaras should stay pretty much as is for a while, but will inevitably be redesigned on the new sedan platform. Timing is unclear, but a model-year 2004 changeover seems likely, with sales perhaps commencing by the middle of calendar '03. Keep checking back with us for further information on all these new Toyotas as it becomes available.

Acceleration

Camry LE/XLE, I4 auto. Camry LE/XLE, V6 auto. Solara SE cpe, I4 auto. Solara SLE conv Class Average
5 6 5 6 4.9

V6 models are polished and quick: under 8 sec 0-60 mph for our test coupes and sedans. The 4 cyl is also refined and decently peppy. The heavier ragtops are noticeably slower with any powerteam.
Fuel Economy

Camry LE/XLE, I4 auto. Camry LE/XLE, V6 auto. Solara SE cpe, I4 auto. Solara SLE conv Class Average
6 5 6 5 5.4

A test 4-cyl Camry averaged 22.5 mpg despite lots of urban driving. Our recent V6 test models have averaged in the low 20s on the recommended premium fuel.
Ride Quality

Camry LE/XLE, I4 auto. Camry LE/XLE, V6 auto. Solara SE cpe, I4 auto. Solara SLE conv Class Average
7 7 6 6 5.3

Comfortably supple and absorbent. Some unwanted float occurs over dips and swells even in the more firmly damped Solaras.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Camry LE/XLE, I4 auto. Camry LE/XLE, V6 auto. Solara SE cpe, I4 auto. Solara SLE conv Class Average
5 5 5 5 5.1

Safe, predictable and pleasant, but far from sporty. Steering is quick and precise, but overassisted and numb. Body lean is apparent but not alarming in tight, fast turns. Brakes are strong, easily modulated.
Quietness

Camry LE/XLE, I4 auto. Camry LE/XLE, V6 auto. Solara SE cpe, I4 auto. Solara SLE conv Class Average
7 7 7 5 5.2

Among the best in class, thanks to hushed powertrains and ample, strategic sound-deadening. Tire thrum intrudes on coarse pavement, though, and a test ragtop Solara suffered undue rough-road body flex and a creaky top.
Controls

Camry LE/XLE, I4 auto. Camry LE/XLE, V6 auto. Solara SE cpe, I4 auto. Solara SLE conv Class Average
10 10 10 10 6

No eye candy here, but simple, clean and intuitive design and layout. Cabin materials and workmanship a cut-above most every rival.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Camry LE/XLE, I4 auto. Camry LE/XLE, V6 auto. Solara SE cpe, I4 auto. Solara SLE conv Class Average
7 7 7 7 5.5

Adult-size space, comfortable bucket seats. Drivers enjoy a good range of adjustments, but all body styles have nagging over-the-shoulder blind spots; convertible is worst with its tiny rear window.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Camry LE/XLE, I4 auto. Camry LE/XLE, V6 auto. Solara SE cpe, I4 auto. Solara SLE conv Class Average
5 5 3 3 4.1

Not enough width for a middle adult, but good room for two. Entry/exit is easy in Camrys, awkward in Solaras due to long doors, narrowish floor passages, cumbersome front seat latches and belts.
Cargo Room

Camry LE/XLE, I4 auto. Camry LE/XLE, V6 auto. Solara SE cpe, I4 auto. Solara SLE conv Class Average
3 3 3 2 4.5

Competitive all around; ragtops have the least. Trunk openings are fairly small and high in both Solaras. Coupes and sedans have split-fold rear seatbacks with lockable in-trunk releases for security.
Value within Class

Camry LE/XLE, I4 auto. Camry LE/XLE, V6 auto. Solara SE cpe, I4 auto. Solara SLE conv Class Average
10 9 8 6 5.8

Among the pricier midsize cars, but well worth it. Sporty types find Camry/Solara rather bland. But refinement, design, and workmanship rival those of much costlier cars. Toyota reliability and high resale value cement their Best Buy credentials. Note: Redesigned models due for 2002.

Price note: Prices are for vehicles distributed by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. The dealer invoice and destination charge may be higher in areas served by independent distributors.
Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
