2001 Saab 9-5 Review
Saab's luxury line features sedans and wagons in base, SE, and sporty Aero trim, the last with lower-body skirting and sport suspension. All have antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, traction control, front head/torso side airbags, and front head restraints designed to counteract whiplash. Base models have 185 hp, Aeros 230, both from turbo 4-cyl engines. SE V6 has 200 hp. Automatic transmission is standard for SE, optional elsewhere. General Motors owns Saab. Its OnStar assistance system is standard, includes voice-activated Internet, phone, and e-mail. Saab covers scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36,000 mi., excluding wear items like tires. Wagons do not offer 3rd-row seating.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $34,000 Saab 9-5 to the $130,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
In a minor surprise, the 9-5 squeaked by the less-expensive 9-3 in calendar-2000 sales, posting a near 20-percent gain to just shy of 20,000 units. The difference? A mere 525 cars, close enough for a Florida election.

The 9-5 is said to be in for a minor facelift in a year or two. Its next major change comes at mid-decade, when the 9-5 moves to parent General Motors' new Epsilon platform. The 9-3 does the same for 2004. Despite this merger, the new senior Saab will be slightly longer and wider than the next 9-3--about the same size, in fact, as the Epsilon-based 2004 Chevy Malibu and Pontiac Grand Am. The 9-5 will also remain upstream of 9-3 in standard features and, of course, price. Sedan and wagon body styles should continue with a choice of several engines, but that's about all anyone can safely say at this point.

Saab is getting its own version of the Buick Rendezvous/Pontiac Aztek for 2004 (see "News" under 9-3), but the Swedish maker has reportedly been working up a second "crossover" vehicle. Code-named "9-W," it's like the Audi allroad in being a regular 9-5 wagon turned into a quasi-SUV via extra ground clearance, bigger wheels and tires, standard all-wheel drive, and special trim. A big GM-designed V8 had been the rumored power source, but a more likely prospect is a new turbocharged Saab version of the European GM 3.0-liter V6 used in today's 9-5s. Though the status of this project is unclear, 9-W wouldn't appear before the 2006 model year unless GM puts it on a fast track, which doesn't seem likely at the moment.

Acceleration

Base sdn, man. SE wgn Aero sdn Class Average
5 6 7 6.1

Good in any model. Test 4-cyl/automatic sedan did 0-60 mph in 8.3 sec, SE V6 sedan took just 7.6. We haven't yet timed an Aero, but it feels even quicker. All suffer some turbo lag--a delay in throttle response.
Fuel Economy

Base sdn, man. SE wgn Aero sdn Class Average
6 5 5 4.7

In our tests, base 4-cyl averaged 22 mpg, V6 19.7, Aero 21.1. Aero is the only model to require premium fuel.
Ride Quality

Base sdn, man. SE wgn Aero sdn Class Average
7 7 4 6.4

Aero's sport suspension rides hard; other 9-5s iron out broken pavement and thumpy freeways alike, isolating all but the worst disturbances.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base sdn, man. SE wgn Aero sdn Class Average
6 6 7 6.3

Secure and predictable, despite more body lean in hard cornering than we prefer. Low-profile tires on Aero and optional on others have poor wet-weather traction and expose traction-control system's propensity to cut back engine power, which makes it tricky to cross slippery intersections. Braking is swift, powerful, consistent.
Quietness

Base sdn, man. SE wgn Aero sdn Class Average
6 6 5 6.7

Low wind and engine noise add to long-distance comfort, though tire roar intrudes except on glassy asphalt. Standard hard cargo-area cover helps muffle wagon exhaust and rear tire sounds.
Controls

Base sdn, man. SE wgn Aero sdn Class Average
6 6 6 6.1

Dashboard-layout convenience flawed by automatic climate controls that are mounted too low, need lots of adjusting, and can forget setting between startups. Ignition switch is on floor between front seats, and manual transmission must be in Reverse before ignition key can be removed.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base sdn, man. SE wgn Aero sdn Class Average
7 7 7 7

Plenty of room. Seats are substantial, supportive. Manual tilt/telescope steering wheel is standard. Optional ventilated front seats cooled from within by small fans; some test drivers find them effective, others don't.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base sdn, man. SE wgn Aero sdn Class Average
7 7 7 5.1

Fine head and leg room. Seat is nicely contoured and supportive, but too narrow for three large adults.
Cargo Room

Base sdn, man. SE wgn Aero sdn Class Average
5 7 5 4

Large trunk has a pass-through and flat floor. Wagon's cargo bay is cavernous, and handy roll-out load floor is optional. All models have split-fold rear seatbacks.
Value within Class

Base sdn, man. SE wgn Aero sdn Class Average
3 5 2 4.7

Base 9-5s aren't cheap for 4-cyl cars, but all these Saabs are satisfying and fairly priced, yet still quite individualistic. A heavily revamped 9-5 is due for '02.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Saab 9-5 4-door sedan Saab 9-5 4-door wagon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
