2001 Porsche Boxster Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2001 Porsche Boxster Review
The entry-level Porsches are 2-seat convertibles with mid-mounted horizontally opposed 6-cyl engines. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, side airbags, and a power soft top are standard. The base 2.7-liter Boxster comes with a 5-speed manual transmission, the more-powerful 3.2 S a 6-speed; both offer optional 5-speed automatic with manual-shift buttons. The S also has larger brakes, firmer suspension, dual exhausts, 17-inch wheels instead of 16s; 18-inchers are available for both. Besides minor trim changes, 2001 Boxsters get three new options: Porsche Stability Management traction control/antiskid system, polished wheels, and self-dimming inside/outside mirrors packaged with rain-sensing wipers.
Competition
This class features an interesting mix of hard-core performance models and more luxurious touring convertibles. Our Best Buys give you a little of both worlds. The Chevrolet Corvette is fast, comfortable, and reasonably affordable. Unlike previous models it doesn't beat you up with a hard ride, and it will cruise quietly at highway speeds. Our other Best Buy, the Mazda Miata, is a bare-bones roadster with few frills and average acceleration, but for weekend fun on a twisty back road it's hard to beat.

If you don't mind spending a few more bucks, we recommend you take a look at the Mercedes-Benz SLK. The Mercedes offers an interesting mix of performance and luxury. It also has a retractable hardtop, making it more of an all-weather car.
News
Now in its sixth model year, Boxster remains on an upward sales curve in the U.S. However, the curve flattened in calendar 2000, sales rising 5.4 percent to 22,410, vs a near 31 percent year-to-year gain for calendar '99.

Boxster should see no major change for the next couple of years, after which it will be "significantly restyled," according to one industry source. For 2002, we expect the S model's 6-speed manual transmission to become standard for the base Boxster as well.

Porsche is known to be mulling two new Boxster models, though neither is definite at this time. One is a higher-performance roadster with a turbocharged 2.7-liter engine making around 350 hp, plus an upgraded chassis and unique styling touches. The second prospect is a Boxster coupe with a normally aspirated 230-hp 2.7 and a fastback roofline that produces a look somewhere between that of big-sister 911 and the Audi TT coupe.

Meanwhile, sources close to Porsche say the company is almost certain to sell a "super Boxster" all but identical with the recent Carrera GT concept roadster. That would mean a V10 engine, Porsche's first, with upwards of 560 hp, mounted behind the cockpit in a lightweight structure made at least partly of carbon-fiber. Porsche pegged the concept's 0-60 at under 4 sec; the production model should be close to that, if not lower. Price is being tipped in the vicinity of--hold on--$350,000, a Porsche record, so the "super Boxster" obviously won't be a common sight. No word yet on name, timing or exact specifications and equipment.

Acceleration

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
7 8 7.7

Porsche says the base version does 0-60 mph in 6.4 sec, the S in 5.7--believable numbers from our Boxster experience on road and track. Manual transmission is clean and positive, the automatic is alert and fairly smooth.
Fuel Economy

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
5 5 4.7

Our experience suggests the base model should average 22 mpg overall with manual, the S maybe 2-3 mpg less. Boxster encourages hard charging, though, so your average may vary.
Ride Quality

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
2 2 3.5

Stiff even for sports cars, with lots of tiring thumpy jiggle over tar strips and patches.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
8 10 7.8

Entertaining and athletic, as expected of Porsches, with grippy stability, little body lean. Newly optional antiskid/traction system enhances safety on slippery roads.
Quietness

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
1 1 3.6

High noise levels from all sources are just as long-haul wearing as the stiff ride, but race-car engine sounds should delight enthusiasts.
Controls

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
3 3 5.2

Legible gauges look motorcycle-inspired, but audio and climate controls aren't that easy to master. Throwback floor-hinged gas pedal and no glovebox also annoy.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
4 4 5

Low-slung cockpit decently roomy for 6-footers, and seats hug supportively. Entry/exit demands limberness whether top is up or down. Top-up rear visibility limited by smallish plastic rear window.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
0 0 .7

(No rear seating.)
Cargo Room

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
2 2 2.1

Boxster has front and rear compartments that hold a fair bit of stuff for a 2-seater. Note that there's no topside engine access other than three "service ports" in the rear trunk.
Value within Class

Base, auto. S, man. Class Average
6 6 4

The base Boxster bridges high-revving single-mindedness of the Honda S2000 and the more flexible character of the BMW Z3. Boxster S has skyrocket performance and a price to match. The BMW might be easiest to live with, but most any sports car lover would covet a Boxster.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Porsche Boxster 2-door convertible
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
