2001 Pontiac Aztek Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2001 Pontiac Aztek Review
Pontiac's minivan/SUV crossover is aimed at young, sports-minded buyers. Aztek is based on the Montana minivan and uses the same V6 and automatic transmission. But it has four conventional side doors and a hatchback-type glass liftgate in combination with a drop-down tailgate. Base and GT models come with front-wheel drive or General Motors' Versatrak all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. The front-drive GT has traction control, and AWD models add 4-wheel disc brakes. Front side airbags and ABS are standard. GT options include heated leather front seats, two rear captain's chairs in lieu of a 3-person bench, a slide-out cargo-floor section with storage bins and rollaway wheels, and GM's OnStar assistance system. Available through dealers is a camping package with clip-on tent and fitted air mattress. Maximum towing capacity is 3500 lbs. Buick offers a version as the 2002 Rendezvous, which is longer and has three rows of seats.
Competition
This is by far the hottest market segment right now. Crowded with more than 20 vehicles, midsize SUVs vary in size and type but nearly all seat five adults and offer V6 or V8 engines. Our Best Buy is the car-based Lexus RX 300. Though it lacks a low range in 4WD mode, it's the most carlike to drive and offers all of the versatility of a truck-based model.

Our Recommended choices are all traditional SUVs: the Dodge Durango, which offers optional third-row seating; the best-selling Ford Explorer clone Mercury Mountaineer; the Teutonic Mercedes-Benz M-Class; the utilitarian Nissan Xterra; and the refined but expensive Toyota 4Runner.
News
It's no secret that Aztek has been a sales dud, running at only about a third its projected annual volume. There's also no secret about the reason. It's styling. Not since the Edsel has a vehicle's appearance bombed so badly with critics and the general public. Aztek has also been cited as too expensive for the mainly younger buyers it was supposed to reach. To its undoubted embarrassment, General Motors quickly slapped on incentives to kick-start sales, but even that hasn't done much so far.

GM probably can't do much about prices, nor the Aztek's basic design, but it will address some styling issues for 2002. Though specifics weren't available for this report, those who have seen the facelift say it works wonders through considered changes to the size, shape, color and placement of exterior trim. While even a minor second-year restyle is highly unusual nowadays, it only shows how desperate GM is to turn things around. In other respects, Aztek should remain pretty as is for '02.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

GT, 2WD Class Average
5 4.6

Like their minivan parent, front-drive Azteks have smooth acceleration and good midrange response, though no surplus of either. We have not yet tested an AWD version.
Fuel Economy

GT, 2WD Class Average
5 3.7

Test 2WD GT averaged 18.7 mpg.
Ride Quality

GT, 2WD Class Average
5 3.8

Generally absorbent and well controlled, with the minivan roots yielding better bump absorption than most midsize SUVs muster. Some side-to-side body motions on uneven pavement, though.
Steering/Handling/Braking

GT, 2WD Class Average
4 3.7

Another minivanlike trait. Unstressed in most conditions, with good road grip. Fast turns generate pronounced body lean, and strong crosswinds compromise stability. Mushy-feeling brakes reduce confidence, though routine stopping power seems more than adequate.
Quietness

GT, 2WD Class Average
5 3.7

Relatively low noise levels from engine, wind, road. Few true SUVs are this quiet.
Controls

GT, 2WD Class Average
4 5.8

Gauges and controls are functional despite the dashboard's cartoonish appearance. Thick side roof pillars interfere with visibility over the shoulder, and driver can't easily see front body corners. A rear wiper isn't available and the hatchback glass is quickly coated in a wintertime film of salt and slush. Cabin materials are mostly budget-grade plastics.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

GT, 2WD Class Average
7 5.9

Comfortable seating, though taller drivers may wish for more rearward travel. Step-in is minivan-low, easing entry/exit.
Room/Comfort (rear)

GT, 2WD Class Average
7 4.4

Enough knee, leg, foot space to suit 6-footers. Bench seat is more springy foam than supportive padding. Passengers must twist their feet to get in or out, and large doors are cumbersome in tight spaces.
Cargo Room

GT, 2WD Class Average
8 7.5

Cavernous and versatile. Doors have map pockets with twin bottle holders, rear bench easily removes in two sections, and the available sliding rear storage tray is clever and useful. Aztek carries 4x8 plywood sheets with the tailgate lowered, but the large glass liftgate is heavy and that tailgate doesn't open flat.
Value within Class

GT, 2WD Class Average
4 4.2

As comfortable as any SUV, and packed with features designed for active types. But fit and finish won't please the discerning, list prices aren't commensurate with Aztek's slow sales, and GM has already said it will revise the controversial styling for 2002.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Front Impact, Driver 3
Front Impact, Passenger 4
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
