ACCELERATION
| V6 | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 7 | 6.1 |
V8 is impressive; V6 feels almost as strong except in passing response. Transmissions are smooth and alert.
FUEL ECONOMY
| V6 | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 3 | 4.7 |
In our tests, a V6 averaged 21 mpg, a V8 14.1. Olds recommends 89-octane fuel for both.
RIDE QUALITY
| V6 | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 6.4 |
Copes comfortably with most surfaces, though too firm on rough pavement with the V8's 17-inch tires.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| V6 | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.3 |
Credible near-luxury road manners, but not as athletic as European sport sedans. Steering provides good feedback. Braking is strong and drama-free, though some Auroras tested had overly firm brake-pedal feel.
QUIETNESS
| V6 | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6.7 |
Low wind, tire noise. Both engines are quiet, but sound less refined than best import brands.
CONTROLS
| V6 | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 6.1 |
Audio unit mounted low, requiring long look away to adjust, though redundant steering-wheel buttons help. Climate controls are a bit too complex. Rearward visibility limited by high tail, bulky center stop lamp.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| V6 | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 7 |
More than adequate leg and head room, even with sunroof. Plenty of seat/steering wheel adjustments for drivers to get comfortable, though lumbar support feels too prominent to some testers.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| V6 | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5.1 |
Plenty of room for tall folks, but cushion is too small and too soft to provide much support. Entry/exit poses no problem.
CARGO ROOM
| V6 | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 |
Generous trunk, with large opening and low liftover, but lid hinges dip into cargo area.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| V6 | V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 4.7 |
Few other sedans in this class offer a V8, but we doubt Aurora can tempt Lexus or BMW owners. This is a pleasant, slightly sporty all-rounder that should appeal to value-minded near-luxury buyers. Unless you plan to keep your Aurora 5-10 years, however, the phase-out of Oldsmobile will mean poor resale value, low lease residual.
