2001 Nissan Sentra Full Review
Date Published: 5/31/08
2001 Nissan Sentra Review
Sentra offers three models and two 4-cyl engines. XE and GXE versions have 126 hp, the sportier SE 145. All offer manual transmission or optional automatic. (The CA model is sold only in California to meet strict emissions standards.) GXE and SE can be ordered with an ABS/front side airbags package. The SE has standard 4-wheel disc brakes and is the only Sentra available with a sunroof. It gets 15-inch alloys in place of the other models' 14-inch steel rims, and offers 16-inchers in a Performance Package that includes a firmer-yet suspension and audio-system and interior-trim upgrades. An in-dash CD changer is an SE and GXE option, while the XE no longer has a driver-seat height adjuster. Due for 2002 is an SE-R performance model with an available 175-hp 2.5-liter 4 cyl, 6-speed manual transmission, and 17-inch wheels.
Competition
A perennial favorite, the Honda Civic, is new and better than ever. We love the wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. New last year was the Ford Focus. Though we loved almost everything about the Focus, we were reluctant to rank it a Best Buy because it was new from the ground up. After a year of living with a ZTS model, we can say that the reliability is good. Focus ranks a notch below Civic in some areas but costs less. Topping the crowded Recommended list are the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys as they are better than the Civic in many ways. However, they are also the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the no-frills Dodge Neon and Toyota Echo, the slightly-upscale Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege. If you are looking for a budget buy, the Hyundai Accent offers a lot for your dollar, however, it's not as refined as more-expensive competitors.
News
Early introduction of fully redesigned 2001 models sparked Sentra sales in a big way last year, calendar-2000 volume swelling a healthy 56.5 percent to some 98,800. In a bid to spark things even more, Nissan revives the SE-R name, last used for 1994, for two extra-sporty 2002 models. Badged SE-R and SE-R Spec V, they feature a new 2.5-liter 4-cyl engine tuned for respective hp of 170 and 180, plus a mesh grille in a specific front fascia, color-matched lower-body "aero" skirts and rear spoiler, firmer handling-oriented suspension, titanium-look gauges with orange lighting, and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The Spec V comes only with 6-speed manual transmission; the regular SE-R offers 5-speed manual or optional automatic. Spec V also comes with a limited-slip front differential, 17-inch wheels instead of 16s, and unique sport front seats. Options for both SE-Rs include antilock brakes, front side airbags, engine immobilizer, and 280-watt premium Rockford Fosgate audio. Both newcomers go on sale this fall along with other 2002 Sentras. Changes for the rest of the line were not available for this report, but we'll have them as soon as they are, so keep checking back with us.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE, man. Class Average
3 4 5 3.7

Test manual-transmission GXE needed a lazy 9.9 sec 0-60 mph; automatics need about 11 sec. SEs are quicker, but really feel spunky only with manual. Sentra's manual suffers imprecise shift action and an overly sharp clutch engagement that makes smooth driving tricky.
Fuel Economy

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE, man. Class Average
6 7 7 6.8

With manual transmission, a test GXE averaged 24.9 mpg and an SE 28.5. Expect slightly less with automatic.
Ride Quality

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE, man. Class Average
4 4 4 3.7

XE/GXE have softish damping and tend to bound over large moguls and jiggle on rippled freeways. SE has firmer, better controlled ride, but can't match class-leading Honda Civic, Volkswagen Jetta.
Steering/Handling/Braking

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE, man. Class Average
4 4 6 4.2

Safe, predictable front-drive handling with quick, responsive steering. XE/GXE have modest cornering grip. SE is more athletic and "tossable."
Quietness

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE, man. Class Average
3 3 3 3.6

Average in any model. Tire roar higher than the class norm, and full-throttle work makes the 126-hp engine fairly loud and thrashy-sounding.
Controls

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE, man. Class Average
7 7 7 5.5

Neat, logical, but unremarkable. Radio sits nice and high, but has small buttons.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE, man. Class Average
4 4 4 4.3

Typical small-car space. Seats nicely padded and shaped. Drivers enjoy standard seat-height adjustment (GXE, SE) and tilt steering wheel, plus good visibility, but insufficient seat travel may cramp longer legs.
Room/Comfort (rear)

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE, man. Class Average
3 3 3 3.1

OK head room for those 6-ft. and under, but very little leg or foot room if front seats very far back. Entry/exit hampered by narrow door bottoms.
Cargo Room

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE, man. Class Average
2 2 2 3.3

Subpar for class, with intrusive trunklid hinges and scant height beneath rear parcel shelf. Average-size trunk opening too. Decent interior storage, though.
Value within Class

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE, man. Class Average
7 7 7 4.6

Not as refined as Civic or roomy as Ford's Focus, but solid enough and priced right to merit a spot on your subcompact-car shopping list.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
