ACCELERATION

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
6 7 4.9

Muscular, with fine punch off the line and strong passing power. Test GXE with automatic transmission did 0-60 mph in a satisfying 7.9 sec. Manual-transmission models do 0-60 in just under 7.0 sec.--true sport-sedan territory.

FUEL ECONOMY

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
6 6 5.4

Good for the class, but not grand: 20-22.5 mpg in our tests, regardless of transmission. Nissan recommends premium fuel.

RIDE QUALITY

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
6 5 5.3

Fine overall, but while GXE and GLE tend to bound over dips that don't upset the SE, the SE suffers some ride choppiness over bumps that other models comfortably absorb.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
5 7 5.1

On its modest tires, the GXE handles well enough, but lacks the steering response and grip that makes the GLE more satisfying and the SE models, with their wider tires and tauter suspension, downright sporting. No model suffers excessive body lean. ABS disc brakes scrub off speed quickly with excellent control.

QUIETNESS

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
6 5 5.2

Mechanically refined. Low wind noise. Tire whine audible on most surfaces, but isn't excessive for a sport-oriented car.

CONTROLS

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
8 8 6

Lookalike knobs for audio volume and temperature can confuse and are a stretch for some of our drivers, but no complaints otherwise. Interior materials and workmanship are solid, and leather-equipped models have a near-luxury-class feel.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
7 7 5.5

Adults enjoy adequate head clearance with available sunroof, plus fine leg space. More rearward seat travel than even lankiest drivers should need. Seats nicely shaped and padded for comfort.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
5 5 4.1

Plenty of knee and head room, but not enough cabin width for three adults.

CARGO ROOM

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
4 4 4.5

Standard 60/40 folding rear seatback augments decently roomy trunk, but trunk aperture won't swallow really bulky cargo.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

GXE, auto. SE, man. Class Average
7 6 5.8

GXE and GLE models are comfort-oriented alternatives to V6 Toyota Camrys and Honda Accords, while manual-trans. Maxima SEs are budget alternatives to BMW and Audi sport sedans. It's this appealing blend of talent, refinement, amenities, and price that earns our Recommended nod.
