2001 Nissan Frontier Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2001 Nissan Frontier Review
A supercharged V6 and leather upholstery are newly available, and all Frontiers get revised styling and a locking tailgate for 2001. Regular-cab models have a 6.5-ft bed, 2-dr extended King Cab models have a 6.2-ft bed, and 4-dr Crew Cabs get a 4.6-ft bed. Regular cabs have 2WD, other Frontiers offer 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing. The base engine is a 143-hp 4 cyl. A 170-hp V6 is standard in 4x4s, Desert Runner, and Crew Cabs. SC versions of the King and Crew cabs have a 210-hp supercharged V6, 17-inch wheels, and stiffer suspension. Manual transmission is standard, automatic optional. V6 models have 4-wheel ABS.
Competition
Among compact pickups two vehicles really stand out: The Dodge Dakota and the Ford Ranger (and clone Mazda B-Series). Dakota is the only one to offer a V8 engine and near-full-size cargo and towing capacity. Ranger is the most refined and probably the best daily use vehicle.

This year we are limiting our Recommended choices to the Toyota Tacoma. It's every bit as good as the Ranger in daily use, just a tad more expensive.
News
Frontier came within striking distance of archrival Toyota Tacoma in calendar-2000 sales, posting a 12.9-percent increase to nearly 109,000 units vs Tacoma's decline to some 147,300. While Ford's top-selling Ranger outscored both Japanese-brand pickups by about 3 to 1, Frontier is doing quite considering that it's still in "recovery" mode after being launched without such class essentials as V6 power and a 4-dr cab. Nissan quickly corrected those deficits, then added Crew Cab models, which remain on almost sellout status, followed for 2001 by more macho styling and a more powerful supercharged V6 option.

Nissan continues Frontier's shoring-up for 2002 by adding long-bed versions of the Crew Cab and giving all models a restyled dashboard and available 400-watt audio system with Rockford Fosgate amplifiers. The long Crew Cab box measures 74.6 inches, 18.3 inches more than the regular bed; Nissan says it's the longest bed of any compact truck with four full doors. Wheelbase and overall length have been extended to match, to 116.1 and 131.1 inches respectively, which puts these Frontiers very close in overall size to a Dodge Dakota Quad Cab. The long-bed Crews are available with the same trim levels and option packages as the regular versions.

These changes apart, Frontier is largely untouched for 2002. The expanded lineup goes on sale in August 2001.

Industry sources say Frontier's vintage-1998 design is on a "short cycle" and will be replaced as early as model-year 2003. Unfortunately, that's all they have to say right now. However, it's logical to assume an all-new design that may share some components with Nissan's first-ever full-size pickup, which will be built at a new factory now going up in Mississippi. Frontiers will continue to be built at Nissan's Tennessee facility.

The new full-size truck, as yet unnamed, is likely to debut for 2004. Word is that it will be larger than Toyota's Tundra so as to compete directly with "true" full-size domestic-brand models. The only engine mooted so far is a derivative of the 4.5-liter V8 from Nissan's luxury-division Infiniti Q45 flagship sedan, possibly enlarged to be more comparable with American V8s. Nissan's recent full-size Alpha-T concept truck suggests showroom models will have very brawny styling, plus bed and cab dimensions that, again, should approach or even exceed those of full-size domestics. Keep checking back with us for more on Nissan's pickup plans as information becomes available.

Acceleration

XE reg. cab 2WD, 4 cyl auto. SE King Cab 4WD, man. SC Crew Cab 4WD, man. Class Average
2 3 4 4

Supercharged V6 gives Frontier a needed shot in the arm even though it feels little faster than the top V6s in most rival compact pickups. It does 0-60 mph in an estimated 9.2 sec and performs best with automatic transmission. Regular V6 took 11.2 sec 0-60 in our test of a manual-transmission 4WD King Cab.
Fuel Economy

XE reg. cab 2WD, 4 cyl auto. SE King Cab 4WD, man. SC Crew Cab 4WD, man. Class Average
5 3 3 4.5

Test manual SC 4WD Crew Cab averaged 15.1 mpg on the required premium fuel. Non-supercharged models use regular fuel, and we averaged 18.5 mpg with an automatic-transmission 4-cyl 2WD regular cab and 14 mpg with manual V6 4x4 King Cab.
Ride Quality

XE reg. cab 2WD, 4 cyl auto. SE King Cab 4WD, man. SC Crew Cab 4WD, man. Class Average
3 4 4 3.4

Among the better small pickups, with little impact harshness on sharp bumps but, as with any truck, ride motions are choppy on rough or broken surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

XE reg. cab 2WD, 4 cyl auto. SE King Cab 4WD, man. SC Crew Cab 4WD, man. Class Average
3 3 4 3.3

Cornering lean is moderate in any model, but the rear end hops without a load and steering is light and numb.
Quietness

XE reg. cab 2WD, 4 cyl auto. SE King Cab 4WD, man. SC Crew Cab 4WD, man. Class Average
2 3 3 3.3

Supercharger hushes the V6 some, but all Frontier engines are noisy and gruff. Wind and tire ruckus also higher than the class norm.
Controls

XE reg. cab 2WD, 4 cyl auto. SE King Cab 4WD, man. SC Crew Cab 4WD, man. Class Average
5 5 5 5.9

Good layout, helped by recent move to all-rotary-dial climate controls. Though dashboard is hard plastic, it doesn't look cheap. Most testers prefer traditional foot-pedal parking brake to Frontier's pull-out umbrella-style lever.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

XE reg. cab 2WD, 4 cyl auto. SE King Cab 4WD, man. SC Crew Cab 4WD, man. Class Average
3 4 4 3.9

Generous space for 6-footers even in regular cabs, but seats are too low for some. Good entry/exit even on 4x4s, thanks to a lower step-in than some rivals.
Room/Comfort (rear)

XE reg. cab 2WD, 4 cyl auto. SE King Cab 4WD, man. SC Crew Cab 4WD, man. Class Average
0 2 3 1.3

Crew Cabs have better entry/exit than extended-cabs with rear-hinged doors, but it's still tight getting in and out and not very roomy. Rear-seat leg space adequate for adults only with front seats well forward. King Cab's two fold-down rear jump seats are small, tough to get to.
Cargo Room

XE reg. cab 2WD, 4 cyl auto. SE King Cab 4WD, man. SC Crew Cab 4WD, man. Class Average
1 3 3 2.5

Regular-cabs have typically limited in-cab storage, but Kings and Crews have useful cargo space.
Value within Class

XE reg. cab 2WD, 4 cyl auto. SE King Cab 4WD, man. SC Crew Cab 4WD, man. Class Average
3 3 5 6.2

Changes for 2001 are mostly cosmetic, giving this basically solid but unexciting truck a fresh face. Crew Cab body style and supercharged V6 are Frontier's main attractions and are a combination worth considering.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
