ACCELERATION

ES, I4 auto. GTZ Class Average
3 6 3.7

The 4-cyl provides adequate go, clocking 10.3 sec in our 0-60 mph tests. Our GTZ took just 8.3 sec with its strong V6. Both engines are smooth, as is the automatic transmission, but the torquier V6 has far better mid-range oomph.

FUEL ECONOMY

ES, I4 auto. GTZ Class Average
6 5 6.8

Our test V6 Galants have averaged 21-22.2 mpg on the required premium fuel. With slightly more highway driving, our 4-cyl automatic ES averaged 24 mpg on regular gas.

RIDE QUALITY

ES, I4 auto. GTZ Class Average
5 4 3.7

Comfortably compliant and controlled aside from minor tail hop over sharp ridges. Small bumps are most noticed in the GTZ with its wider tires and firmer damping.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

ES, I4 auto. GTZ Class Average
4 6 4.2

A handling-oriented chassis gives the GTZ slightly less body lean in tight corners, but all Galants have predictable yet sporty front-drive moves, abetted by accurate steering.

QUIETNESS

ES, I4 auto. GTZ Class Average
4 4 3.6

Engine noise and wind rush are well muffled. Tire roar is noticed mainly on coarse pavement.

CONTROLS

ES, I4 auto. GTZ Class Average
6 6 5.5

Well placed and self-explanatory. Design and layout are clean and simple, but uninspired.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

ES, I4 auto. GTZ Class Average
4 4 4.3

Comfortable seats, but no excess of head or leg room for tall occupants. Visibility aft is hindered by high-tail styling, but is good to the front and sides. Standard 6-way driver's seat across the board, power operated on LS and GTZ.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

ES, I4 auto. GTZ Class Average
3 3 3.1

Only average room for two adults, three in a pinch. Narrow floor passages with front seats pushed back impede entry/exit, though not severely.

CARGO ROOM

ES, I4 auto. GTZ Class Average
3 3 3.3

Galant's flat-floor low-liftover trunk is spacious enough, and all models save the base DE have a split-fold rear seatback.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

ES, I4 auto. GTZ Class Average
6 6 4.6

An attractive value-minded alternative to the class-leading Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, with a particularly nice price advantage in V6 form. Galant also matches its rivals for driving pleasure, but isn't quite as well built.
