2001 Mercury Sable: Overview

Mercury's midsize car is offered in sedan and wagon form. Both come in GS, uplevel LS, and LS Premium trim. Standard is a 155-hp 3.0-liter V6; a 200-hp V6 is standard on LS Premium, optional on LS. A 4-speed automatic is the only transmission. Traction control, ABS, and front side-airbags are part of the Secure Group option package. Power adjustable foot pedals are standard on LS, optional on GS. Bucket seats for 5-passenger capacity or front bench for 6-passenger seating are available. Unlike Taurus wagon, Sable doesn't offer a 2-place 3rd-row seat. Sable's performance and accommodations mirror those of similarly equipped Tauruses.

COMPETITION

Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan forms, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced.

Recommended models include the smooth Chevrolet Impala, the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, the sporty Nissan Maxima, surprising Olds Intrigue, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles.
