2001 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2001 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Review
Mercedes' senior 2-seat convertibles come in V8 SL500 and V12 SL600 form. A power soft top and removable aluminum hardtop are standard, and a roll bar behind the cockpit automatically pops up when sensors detect an impending rollover. A glass-roof Panorama hardtop is available. Other standard features include ABS, 4-wheel disc brakes, side airbags, and antiskid and brake-assist technologies. Mercedes TeleAid assistance systems and BabySmart child-seat recognition are also included. Heated seats and automatically adjustable shock-absorbers are standard for SL600, optional for SL500. New for 2001 are standard 18-inch wheels and "aero" lower body styling by Mercedes' AMG performance arm. Launched this spring as early '02 models are Silver Arrow limited edition versions with special trim. Redesigned SLs are due for 2003.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $34,000 Saab 9-5 to the $130,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
The SL was last updated for 1995, receiving a heavy makeover of its basic 1990-model design. Sales had been holding up reasonably well since, but the SL lost ground in calendar 2000, falling 31 percent to just 5409 units. Probable factors include the economy's year-end slowdown, strong in-house competition from the newer 2-seat SLK roadster and 4-seat CLK convertible, and the fact that some customers may be waiting for the new-generation SL that's been in the news for some three years now.

They won't have to wait much longer, as Mercedes finally unwraps a fully redesigned SL at this autumn's Frankfurt Auto Show. U.S. sales should begin in early 2002 for the '03 campaign. Like the latest S-Class sedans and CL coupes, the new SL will be no heavier than its predecessor despite slight gains in length and width. Credit greater use of aluminum for a new purpose-built platform, a surprising extravagance for such a low-volume car. Wheelbase is also slightly longer to improve cockpit room and provide storage for a standard SLK-style power-retractable hard top. The chassis sports new suspension components borrowed from the redesigned 2003 E-Class, rack-and-pinion steering instead of less precise recirculating-ball, an improved traction/antiskid system, and uprated antilock brakes with electrohydraulic actuation.

Initial U.S. offerings will again comprise V8 SL500 and V12 SL600. A bit later comes a high-performance AMG version with a supercharged V8 making a rumored 450 horsepower. A base V6 SL320 is slated for Europe, but may not come Stateside. The only transmission at first will be a 5-speed automatic similar to today's unit, but a stronger new 6-speed automatic will reportedly be offered for '04, likely as standard for the high-torque V12 and AMG models.

Naturally, the new SLs will offer the same high-tech features as other newer premium Mercedes. Among these are the anti-roll Active Body Control system, Distronic "smart" cruise control, and the COMAND dashboard screen for controlling audio, cell phone and navigation functions as well as the Web-based Info Services e-mail and Internet access.

As for styling, the new SL is more rounded than the old and a bit more wedge-shaped in profile. Mercedes' now-customary oval headlamps appear in a more visibly downswept nose. The folding hard top includes a slightly curved rear window and is said to be more compact and quicker to raise or lower than that of the smaller SLK. Pricing wasn't available for this report, but Mercedes' recent track record suggests the new SLs will cost little if any more than the outgoing models and may even be cheaper on a comparably equipped basis.

Acceleration

SL500 SL600 Class Average
7 8 7.7

Big power offsets 2-ton-plus curb weights, for a 0-60-mph time of around 6.0 sec. for both models. Engines and transmission work in pleasing harmony.
Fuel Economy

SL500 SL600 Class Average
4 2 4.7

Expect to average around 15 mpg in the V8 model, just 13 or so in the V12. Both require premium fuel.
Ride Quality

SL500 SL600 Class Average
5 5 3.5

Ever firm but comfortable for short-wheelbase cars, though things can turn jiggly on rough pavement.
Steering/Handling/Braking

SL500 SL600 Class Average
6 6 7.8

Too bulky to be genuine sports cars, but SLs power quickly and safely through corners without much body lean, aided by standard antiskid system.
Quietness

SL500 SL600 Class Average
6 6 3.6

Engines muted even in hard driving, but some wind rush intrudes even with the standard aluminum hardtop attached, and tire roar can annoy on coarse surfaces. Cloth top seals well.
Controls

SL500 SL600 Class Average
5 5 5.2

Some control icons aren't obvious, but no major flaws. Soft top powers up and down with one-button ease. SLs are beautifully built and feel substantial, but have more body shake over bumps than we think right for cars this costly.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

SL500 SL600 Class Average
8 8 5

Spacious for those short of NBA height. Myriad adjustments for firm but comfortable seats. Driver benefits from power tilt/telescope steering wheel linked with mirror and seat positions. Low body build hampers entry/exit a bit. Visibility good with either top in place.
Room/Comfort (rear)

SL500 SL600 Class Average
0 0 .7

(No rear seating.)
Cargo Room

SL500 SL600 Class Average
2 2 2.1

Limited but adequate for two, and it doesn't change when the soft top is lowered. No way to take along the heavy hardtop, which takes two to remove or install.
Value within Class

SL500 SL600 Class Average
3 3 4

Open-air allure meets big-Mercedes comfort, safety, dynamic ability, and cachet. Frightening prices, but resale values hold up like ancient oaks.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
