ACCELERATION
| ML320 | ML430 | ML55 AMG | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 6 | 7 | 4.6 |
No model feels snappy off the line, but ML320 does 0-60 mph in a decent 9.1 sec, the ML430 in about 8; ML55 clocks a class-leading 6.4 sec, according to Mercedes.
FUEL ECONOMY
| ML320 | ML430 | ML55 AMG | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 2 | 3.7 |
Test ML320s averaged 13.9-15 mpg, typical of 6-cyl midsize SUVs. Over 15,500 mi., extended-use-test 1999 ML430 averaged 15.7 mpg--better than most V8 SUVs. Test ML55 managed only 12.9. V8s require premium fuel.
RIDE QUALITY
| ML320 | ML430 | ML55 AMG | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 3 | 2 | 3.8 |
ML320 is comfortably absorbent, but more trucky than carlike. V8 models are jiggly, though not punishing, over bumps and broken pavement, thanks to firmer damping and harder lower-profile tires.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| ML320 | ML430 | ML55 AMG | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 5 | 3.7 |
Poised and stable for SUVs, with less cornering lean than some. Steering precise and linear, but has weak self-centering. AWD with traction control brakes any or all wheels to maintain grip, but doesn't match traditional setups for heavy snow and off-road trails. Stops are strong, stable.
QUIETNESS
| ML320 | ML430 | ML55 AMG | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 3 | 3.7 |
V6 sounds coarse when pushed. V8s emit throaty roar and have a deep rumble at idle. All models refined for SUVs but noisier than most cars--and the BMW X5.
CONTROLS
| ML320 | ML430 | ML55 AMG | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 5.8 |
Some control markings won't be obvious to first-time Mercedes owners, but ergonomics otherwise good. Cabin materials recently upgraded, but still don't quite match X5 or Lexus LX 470.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| ML320 | ML430 | ML55 AMG | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 8 | 8 | 5.9 |
Comfortable and spacious despite bulky console. Take-charge driver positioning, clear all-round visibility. Large doors and reasonably low SUV step-in ease entry/exit.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| ML320 | ML430 | ML55 AMG | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 8 | 4.4 |
Easy access here too, thanks to low sills and unusually wide doors. Three adults won't be crowded, but leg room tight with the front seats fully aft.
CARGO ROOM
| ML320 | ML430 | ML55 AMG | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 8 | 7.5 |
Ample maximum volume, but folding the rear seat takes practice and patience. A low-set deck is appreciated with heavy cargo.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| ML320 | ML430 | ML55 AMG | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 3 | 2 | 4.2 |
One of the best true SUVs for refinement, handling, overall competence. Steep prices, but high resale values boost the appeal of this solid Recommended pick.
