2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Full Review
Date Published: 5/03/08
2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Review
Mercedes' least-expensive line is redesigned for '01 around slightly larger dimensions, new styling, and new features. Sedans bowed first as the C240 with a 2.6-liter V6 and the C320 with a 3.2 V6. Standard on both are 16-inch wheels (vs. 15s before), traction control, antiskid system, ABS, and 4-wheel disc brakes. Also included are front and rear side airbags, curtain side-airbags, and Mercedes' TeleAid assistance system and BabySmart child-seat recognition system. The C240 has a standard 6-speed manual transmission--a first for this line. A 5-speed automatic with manual shift gate is optional and is the C320's only transmission. Options for both include leather upholstery, COMAND video navigation system, and a Sport Package with upgraded suspension and aero body add-ons. A new Internet-based "InfoServices" feature displays user-selected information on the COMMAND screen. Due later this year as an early '02 model is a new C230 2-dr hatchback with a 190-hp supercharged 4 cyl. Also on tap for '02 are a C320 wagon, the first C-Class wagon sold in the U.S., and the high-performance C32 AMG sedan with a 349-hp supercharged V6.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has a clear benchmark; it is the Acura TL (and its 2-door cousin Acura CL). The TL succeeds in blending comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. If you are leaning more toward the luxury scale, the Lexus ES 300 might be a more practical purchase.

We also recommend the sporty and Euro-flavored Audi A6, the comfortable Buick Park Avenue, the affordable and fast Infiniti I30.
News
The C-Class line attracted exactly 34,600 buyers in calendar 2000, a year-to-year gain of 16.2 percent. And that was with mainly old-design models, not the new 2001s.

Mercedes has already announced three new C-Class variations for 2002: the C320 wagon, equipped like the counterpart sedan; the 190-hp C230 Sports Coupe, a hatchback sharing a supercharged 4-cyl engine with the base SLK roadster; and the C32 AMG, a high-performance limited-edition sedan packing the same 349-hp supercharged 3.2 V6 that powers the 2002 SLK32 AMG, a hot-rod version of the little roadster. The C320 wagon marks the first time Mercedes has sold this C-Class model in the U.S. It's a rival for BMW's 3-Series models, but also competes with other upscale compact Euro wagons like Audi A4, Saab 9-5, and VW Passat.

With these additions, the C-Class line should take a breather for the next year or three, though M-B will doubtless add some new features along the way. And there may yet be more variations on this newborn basic design. Among the most likely prospects: an SUV-flavored C320 sport wagon with M-B's 4-Matic all-wheel drive, and V6 and supercharged V6 Sports Coupes.

Acceleration

C240, man. C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. C320 w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 4 7 5.6

We've tested C240 and C320 sedans thus far, and the C320 is easily faster and more confident-feeling than the C240 in most every circumstance. The manual-transmission C240 is lively enough--0-60 mph in 9.2 sec in our test--but automatic-transmission versions feel underpowered for the near-luxury class. The C320 did 0-60 in just 7.2 sec. Both V6 engines are quite smooth, though.
Fuel Economy

C240, man. C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. C320 w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 5 5 5.4

Test C320 averaged 19.2 mpg despite performance tests. Manual-transmission C240 disappointed at just 18.4. Both engines require premium fuel.
Ride Quality

C240, man. C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. C320 w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 6 7 5.3

One of this car's best features. Supple and composed on most any surface with the base suspension, a bit stiffer and more fidgety with the Sport Package, but still comfortable.
Steering/Handling/Braking

C240, man. C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. C320 w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 7 7 6.6

Not as agile as a BMW 3-Series or Lexus IS 300, but assured and highly capable nonetheless. Sport Package further improves the base suspension's already good grip and steering response. Brakes provide short, undramatic emergency stops, but pedal action slightly touchy in routine use.
Quietness

C240, man. C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. C320 w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 7 5.2

Impressively low wind rush, and engines rise only to distant growl at top rpm. Tire noise relatively high, especially with more aggressive Sport Package rubber, but very quiet cars overall.
Controls

C240, man. C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. C320 w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 6 6.5

Mostly typical Mercedes, but new wrinkles such as steering-wheel switches for calling up vehicle and trip data take time to sort out. Power window switches are too low on the doors and, curiously, not lighted. Cabin materials decidedly upscale, but marred by the occasional visible mold seam and a few thin plastic panels.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

C240, man. C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. C320 w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 6 5.7

A bit cozy-feeling, but 6-footers have plenty of space on firm, supportive seats. Standard tilt/telescope steering wheel (powered on C320) helps tailor a good basic driving stance. All-round visibility good but not great.
Room/Comfort (rear)

C240, man. C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. C320 w/nav. sys. Class Average
4 4 4 3.5

OK for two adults but no more. Head room tight for 6-footers and taller, who must sit knees-up if front seats are more than halfway back. Underseat foot room also at a premium. Entry/exit pretty easy, though.
Cargo Room

C240, man. C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. C320 w/nav. sys. Class Average
3 3 3 3.5

Usefully shaped trunk holds more than its 12.0-cu-ft volume implies. Standard split-fold rear seat with in-trunk releases enhances versatility.
Value within Class

C240, man. C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. C320 w/nav. sys. Class Average
4 4 7 4

The C-Class grows up. It's now less a "baby Benz" and more a near-luxury car desirable in its own right. Despite some cut-rate interior details, it competes head-on with the best in class for driving enjoyment, features, and long-term value.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Mercedes-Benz C-Class 4-door sedan
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
