ACCELERATION
| C240, man. | C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. | C320 w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 4 | 7 | 5.6 |
We've tested C240 and C320 sedans thus far, and the C320 is easily faster and more confident-feeling than the C240 in most every circumstance. The manual-transmission C240 is lively enough--0-60 mph in 9.2 sec in our test--but automatic-transmission versions feel underpowered for the near-luxury class. The C320 did 0-60 in just 7.2 sec. Both V6 engines are quite smooth, though.
FUEL ECONOMY

Test C320 averaged 19.2 mpg despite performance tests. Manual-transmission C240 disappointed at just 18.4. Both engines require premium fuel.
RIDE QUALITY

|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 7 | 5.3 |
One of this car's best features. Supple and composed on most any surface with the base suspension, a bit stiffer and more fidgety with the Sport Package, but still comfortable.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

Not as agile as a BMW 3-Series or Lexus IS 300, but assured and highly capable nonetheless. Sport Package further improves the base suspension's already good grip and steering response. Brakes provide short, undramatic emergency stops, but pedal action slightly touchy in routine use.
QUIETNESS
| C240, man. | C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. | C320 w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 7 | 5.2 |
Impressively low wind rush, and engines rise only to distant growl at top rpm. Tire noise relatively high, especially with more aggressive Sport Package rubber, but very quiet cars overall.
CONTROLS

Mostly typical Mercedes, but new wrinkles such as steering-wheel switches for calling up vehicle and trip data take time to sort out. Power window switches are too low on the doors and, curiously, not lighted. Cabin materials decidedly upscale, but marred by the occasional visible mold seam and a few thin plastic panels.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

A bit cozy-feeling, but 6-footers have plenty of space on firm, supportive seats. Standard tilt/telescope steering wheel (powered on C320) helps tailor a good basic driving stance. All-round visibility good but not great.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| C240, man. | C240 w/Sport Pkg., auto. | C320 w/nav. sys. | Class Average |

| 4 | 4 | 4 | 3.5 |
OK for two adults but no more. Head room tight for 6-footers and taller, who must sit knees-up if front seats are more than halfway back. Underseat foot room also at a premium. Entry/exit pretty easy, though.
CARGO ROOM

Usefully shaped trunk holds more than its 12.0-cu-ft volume implies. Standard split-fold rear seat with in-trunk releases enhances versatility.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS

The C-Class grows up. It's now less a "baby Benz" and more a near-luxury car desirable in its own right. Despite some cut-rate interior details, it competes head-on with the best in class for driving enjoyment, features, and long-term value.
