Vehicle Highlights
Revised interior, brakes and chassis, a restyled nose, and the midyear addition of a British Racing Green Special Edition highlight the 2001 Miata. Special Editions get wood interior trim and other exclusive touches. They join base and LS models. All have a manual-folding soft top with heated glass rear window. A removable hardtop is optional. The sole engine is a 4 cyl rated at 142 hp, 2 more than last year. Mazda originally listed it at 155 hp for '01, but altered the rating due to emissions regulations. Seats and center console are redesigned and gauges get chrome bezels. Base models come with a 5-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed manual is standard on Special Edition, optional on LS. Automatic transmission is optional on base and LS. ABS is available only on LS and Special Edition. Sixteen-inch wheels are standard on LS and Special Edition, optional on base Miatas in place of 15s. Sports Look and Aggressive Look appearance packages are other midyear newcomers.
COMPETITION
This class features an interesting mix of hard-core performance models and more luxurious touring convertibles. Our Best Buys give you a little of both worlds. The Chevrolet Corvette is fast, comfortable, and reasonably affordable. Unlike previous models it doesn't beat you up with a hard ride, and it will cruise quietly at highway speeds. Our other Best Buy, the Mazda Miata, is a bare-bones roadster with few frills and average acceleration, but for weekend fun on a twisty back road it's hard to beat.
If you don't mind spending a few more bucks, we recommend you take a look at the Mercedes-Benz SLK. The Mercedes offers an interesting mix of performance and luxury. It also has a retractable hardtop, making it more of an all-weather car.
