2001 Lincoln Navigator Review
This luxury variant of the Ford Expedition seats up to eight and offers a rear-seat video entertainment system. Navigator has a 300-hp version of the 5.4-liter V8 that makes 260 hp in the Expedition. Standard are automatic transmission, front side airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, and power adjustable pedals. Navigator is available with rear-wheel drive or Ford's Control Trac 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes low-range gearing. Standard seating consists of front- and 2nd-row buckets and a 3-passenger 3rd-row bench. A 3-passenger 2nd-row bench is available at no charge. Navigator's performance and accommodations are comparable to those of its Ford sibling.
Competition
Though this segment has cooled somewhat with the rise in fuel prices, it's still one of the hottest. Our Best Buys include the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and GMC Yukon. We love the size, comfort, and power of these big SUVs. The GM models get the nod in overall ratings, but shop and compare both before you buy.

For a few more bucks you can get the Recommended Toyota Land Cruiser. Its high price is the only thing holding back this refined and drivable SUV.
News
Sales of big SUVs were softening even before the economy started slowing, and this Lincoln was one victim. In fact, Navigator slipped for the second year in a row, declining in calendar 2000 by some 3 percent to just under 34,000. This follows a 10-percent year-to-year hit in '99.

Though the related Ford Expedition is being restyled for 2002, Navigator shouldn't change as much, if at all, this so its lower-priced sister can stand out a little more. Besides, Lincoln will be busy in the coming year with spotlighting its new Blackwood "crossover pickup".

Then too, a more thorough makeover is just around the corner for both Navigator and Expedition, the 2003 models being slated for new exterior body panels that will separate the two versions even more, plus a first-ever independent rear suspension like that of the new 2002 Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer. At the same time, say industry informants, the Lincoln's interior will be revamped to put additional image distance between Navigator and Expedition. That likely means more standard and optional amenities--and higher prices.

Also due for 2003 is a bucks-up Lincoln version of the redesigned '02 Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer. This so-called "baby Navigator" is expected to be introduced in early calendar 2002 under the Compass or Equator nameplates, and is said to be slightly larger outside than Explorer/Mountaineer. It's a logical followup to Navigator, which has accomplished its main mission of attracting younger, more affluent buyers who'd never bought a Lincoln before. Predictably, Compass/Equator follows the Navigator formula with unique front-end sheetmetal, body detailing and interior features, plus more standard horsepower--a rumored 280 minimum from a massaged 4.6-liter V8. Expect a big wheel/tire package (17s or 18s) and possibly all-wheel drive, borrowed from Mountaineer, as well as full-zoot trappings and a price to match.

But why stop with one new SUV? Word is that Lincoln is preparing a premium version of the compact Ford Escape for 2002, though that timing seems a bit optimistic given everything else on Lincoln's now-crowded product plate. Our guess is 2003 or '04. Whenever it appears, look for another Navigator-type upgrading of appearance, features and power. You'll have details as soon as we do.
