ACCELERATION
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6.4 |
An effortless cruiser with strong pickup from all speeds, but the engine isn't as brawny--or smooth--as Cadillac's similarly sized Northstar V8.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 4.3 |
Relatively thrifty. Extended-use test car averaged 18.5 mpg over 10,300 mi. Lincoln recommends premium gas.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 7.7 |
Long-term test car had the Driver Select System. None of its various suspension settings delivered the blend of comfort and control befitting cars of this class. Stick with the base setup.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 6.1 |
Again, the Driver Select System offers more options than the base suspension, but none really improve cornering control or steering feel and precision. Adjustable steering never feels natural. Stopping power is strong, modulation good.
QUIETNESS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 7.8 |
Engine note is pleasing and mostly subdued, but there's audible tire rumble on concrete surfaces, and some on our staff judge wind noise high for a luxury sedan.
CONTROLS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.6 |
Clear, user-friendly. Bright, electronically defined gauge markings easy to read. Driver Select System includes convenient steering-wheel climate and radio controls. Rearward vision is impeded by headrests and big roof pillars. Overall build quality is good though we noticed a minor dashboard rattle on our extended-use car. Cabin has real wood trim.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 7.7 |
Cabin is too narrow for three adults not to rub shoulders. Some may find the seat cushions too soft for best long-distance support.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 6.9 |
Limited cabin width and over-soft seats prevail here too. Leg room is not generous and toe space under the front seats is tight.
CARGO ROOM
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 4.5 |
There's more than enough for a family of four on a long trip, though occupants may wish for more odds-and-ends stowage inside.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 4.9 |
Quiet and powerful, but Continental is a near-luxury also-ran in terms of comfort, room, and image. This slow-seller is worth considering only if you can get a hefty discount.
