2001 Kia Rio Review
Among the least expensive cars on the market, Rio is sized and priced below Kia's Sephia and Spectra subcompacts. Rio is derived from the 1995-97 Ford Aspire hatchback this South Korean automaker designed and built before entering the U.S. market under its own name. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and air conditioning are among the options, as is an "Upgrade Package" with power steering and tilt steering wheel. Hyundai is Kia's corporate parent and its long warranty applies here: 5 years/60,000 mi. basic, 10/100,000 powertrain, 5 years/unlimited mi. roadside assistance. To the Rio sedan, Kia plans to add a station-wagon body style as an early 2002 model.
Competition
A perennial favorite, the Honda Civic, is new and better than ever. We love the wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. New last year was the Ford Focus. Though we loved almost everything about the Focus, we were reluctant to rank it a Best Buy because it was new from the ground up. After a year of living with a ZTS model, we can say that the reliability is good. Focus ranks a notch below Civic in some areas but costs less. Topping the crowded Recommended list are the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys as they are better than the Civic in many ways. However, they are also the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the no-frills Dodge Neon and Toyota Echo, the slightly-upscale Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege. If you are looking for a budget buy, the Hyundai Accent offers a lot for your dollar, however, it's not as refined as more-expensive competitors.
News
Rio faces tough sledding as a new entry in the cut-throat small-car market, where sales have been mostly flat. Kia sold some 16,600 Rio sedans from the model's July 2000 launch through year-end, a fairly mediocre performance for the class.

But sales help may be on the way for 2002. Bowing this summer is a 4-door wagon that's trimmed and equipped like the sedan but priced a few hundred dollars higher. The exact price is still pending, but Kia says this Rio will be America's lowest priced wagon by a good margin. By early 2002, Kia will add a Rio hatchback. No word on the number of doors, but we'd guess it will have four, plus slightly upscale equipment and pricing in the same way Kia's larger Spectra hatchback was spun off from the Sephia sedan.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base, man. Base, auto. Class Average
2 2 3.7

Automatic-equipped test sedan ran 0-60 mph in a slow 11.5 sec. It coped well with fast-paced city/suburban traffic, but struggled to reach highway speed even at full throttle. Manual transmission feels only slightly livelier.
Fuel Economy

Base, man. Base, auto. Class Average
6 7 6.8

Unimpressive, given light weight and mediocre power. Automatic-transmission test car averaged 25.2 mpg. Manual-transmission version 22.9.
Ride Quality

Base, man. Base, auto. Class Average
2 2 3.7

Busy and not that supple despite soft damping. Choppy on scalloped freeways, with mild but unwanted bounce over large moguls and dips. Surprisingly absorbent on broken and patchy surfaces, though.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base, man. Base, auto. Class Average
2 2 4.2

Front-drive predictable, but soft damping and slim tires mean modest grip and lots of front-end plowing in tight, fast turns. Quite maneuverable, though, and simulated emergency stops were no problem for our non-ABS-equipped test car.
Quietness

Base, man. Base, auto. Class Average
2 2 3.6

Engine moans and drones in hard acceleration or when cruising above 55 mph or so. Wind rush tolerably low, but tires sing a noisy tune even on fairly smooth pavement.
Controls

Base, man. Base, auto. Class Average
4 4 5.5

Uninspired design, but logical and convenient save smallish audio controls. Lacks tachometer and release for trunklid, but intermittent wipers are standard. Low-budget cabin materials reinforce entry-level pricing. A test car's rear parcel shelf vibrated loudly when a rear door or the trunk lid was slammed.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base, man. Base, auto. Class Average
3 3 4.3

Adequate room for adults. Driving stance slightly confined for larger folks, and optional tilt wheel doesn't lift that high. Aft visibility slightly hindered by high-tail styling.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base, man. Base, auto. Class Average
2 2 3.1

Very tight for adult legs unless front passengers move well up. Limited head room, too. Entry/exit tight because doors have narrow bottoms and don't open wide.
Cargo Room

Base, man. Base, auto. Class Average
2 2 3.3

Good for such a small car, but trunk opening won't swallow large boxes, and a fold-down rear seatback isn't offered.
Value within Class

Base, man. Base, auto. Class Average
1 1 4.6

Rio offers "cheap wheels" economy and a generous warranty, but Kia's resale values are low, partly a recognition of its unproven record of reliability. Our test Rios were optioned to around $11,400, which buys a larger, fancier used car in good condition--or a more-desirable Toyota Echo.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Side Impact, Driver 3
Side Impact, Rear Passenger 3
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

The Passenger Restraint Warranty covers seat belts and airbags for 5 years/50,000 miles.
