2001 Jeep Cherokee Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2001 Jeep Cherokee Review
Oldest, least-expensive Jeep. The current design dates from 1984. It continues through model year '01 as a "budget" model alongside its intended replacement, the Liberty, which features more rounded styling and is due this summer. For '01, Cherokee loses its 4-cyl engine, base SE, and uplevel Classic models. Continuing are 2- and 4-dr Sport, 4-dr Limited. Both have 190-hp inline 6-cyl with manual or automatic transmission. Available with rear-wheel drive, Jeep's Command-Trac 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement, or Jeep's Selec-Trac 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement; 4x4s include low-range gearing. ABS is optional.
Competition
Ignored in the past, compact SUVs are now some of the hottest-selling vehicles around. Though our Best Buy Honda CR-V doesn't offer true off-road ability and has milquetoast acceleration, it does mix ride comfort, cargo capacity, and versatility with all-weather traction.

Another car-based mini-SUV, the Subaru Forester, is our Recommended choice. Like the CR-V it doesn't have a low range for serious off-road use, it blends excellent on-road manners with SUV styling.

New this year are the Ford Escape and clone Mazda Tribute. We have been very impressed with early production models and may elevate these two to Best Buys after we get more seat time.
News
This old solider was supposed to trudge on for at least a year after introduction of its eventual replacement, the Liberty. Instead, Cherokee goes out of production in summer 2001. The earlier execution reflects Chrysler Group's recent massive losses and its urgent need to trim costs as much as possible. Faltering demand may also have hastened Cherokee's demise, as calendar 2000 sales fell more than 14 percent from 1999 to some 141,500. While even that volume is still quite respectable for a vehicle that's been around 17 years, it apparently wasn't enough for Chrysler managers now struggling to slash expenses and get their company back into the black.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Sport wgn 2WD, auto. Limited 4WD Class Average
4 4 4.6

Strong throughout the speed range.
Fuel Economy

Sport wgn 2WD, auto. Limited 4WD Class Average
4 4 3.7

Typical for a midsize SUV, fuel economy has averaged about 15 mpg with automatic, 17 with manual in our tests.
Ride Quality

Sport wgn 2WD, auto. Limited 4WD Class Average
3 3 3.8

Not exactly smooth-riding, but base suspension absorbs most bumps without jarring. Optional off-road oriented Up Country Suspension rides rough; spend instead for optional ABS.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Sport wgn 2WD, auto. Limited 4WD Class Average
4 4 3.7

Good balance and tidy dimensions make Cherokee quite maneuverable in most situations, but body lean is evident in turns and directional stability on the highway is subpar.
Quietness

Sport wgn 2WD, auto. Limited 4WD Class Average
3 3 3.7

Cherokee has gained sound insulation over the years, but still suffers powertrain and road resonances absent in most rivals. Wind noise at speed is also high against more modern midsize SUVs.
Controls

Sport wgn 2WD, auto. Limited 4WD Class Average
4 4 5.8

Radio and climate controls are clearly marked and generally easy to reach, though some minor switches placed far right of the control panel are a stretch. Outward vision is good, though larger door mirrors would help lane-changing. Recent test Cherokees had occasional interior rattles and wide panel gaps around hood and tailgate.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Sport wgn 2WD, auto. Limited 4WD Class Average
4 4 5.9

Cherokee shows its age in a low-roof passenger compartment with no surplus of front shoulder room and fairly lofty step-in.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Sport wgn 2WD, auto. Limited 4WD Class Average
3 3 4.4

There's a shortage of knee clearance, seat is hard, backrest too upright. Other offenders are a high step-in and tight rear entry/exit thanks to narrow lower doorways.
Cargo Room

Sport wgn 2WD, auto. Limited 4WD Class Average
7 7 7.5

Inside-mounted spare tire eats up cargo room, but there's still decent space with rear seat in use, and a long load floor with it folded. Outside-mount spare is available from dealers.
Value within Class

Sport wgn 2WD, auto. Limited 4WD Class Average
4 3 4.2

Cherokee is capable on-road and off, and not too expensive provided you go easy on options. Still, being way behind the times in room, ride, and refinement, this is the "blue light special" of compact SUVs.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
