2001 Jaguar XJ Series Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2001 Jaguar XJ Series Review
Jaguar's flagship offers two body lengths. For more rear leg room, XJ8L, Vanden Plas, and Vanden Plas Supercharged models are 5 inches longer than the XJ8 and supercharged XJR versions. All have a 5-speed automatic transmission, traction control, antilock 4-wheel discs, front side airbags, and a 4.0-liter V8. Supercharged models have 370 hp, the others 290. For 2001, all XJs get minor structural revisions and standard rear obstacle detection. Vanden Plas Supercharged adds a navigation system that's optional elsewhere, XJR gets heated rear seats, and the regular Vanden Plas now comes with heated front and rear seats.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $34,000 Saab 9-5 to the $130,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
News
A redesigned XJ is on track for a late-2002 U.S. debut as a 2003 model. Developed as project "X350," it replaces the current "X300", the 1995 makeover of Jaguar's last all-new senior sedan, the 1987 "XJ40".

X350 uses a stretched and heavily modified version of the midsize S-Type/Lincoln LS platform, including a domed roof that should improve head room. The new XJs will be somewhat longer and wider than current models, with 4-inch longer wheelbases for extra legroom in both standard and long versions. Despite these gains, weight will reportedly drop by up to 500 pounds via a high-tech unibody made of bonded and riveted aluminum a la Audi A8. Styling is modernized around classic XJ themes.

Insiders disagree on engine sizes and outputs, but normal and supercharged V8s should be available from day one. The latter is said to produce 400 horsepower, while the former will be either the current 4.0-liter or a 4.3-liter enlargement with about 300 hp regardless. Also strongly rumored is a smaller new base-model engine made practical by the reduced weight. Sources say this would be either a 3.5-liter version of Jaguar's V8 or a V6 of 3.0 or 3.3 liters based on the S-Type/LS engine. The transmission in all cases should be a 5-speed automatic similar to today's XJ unit, though manual shift is an outside possibility for sportier models.

Among new features are a computer-controlled suspension with air springs instead of conventional steel coils, and a more sophisticated traction/antiskid system. The next XJs should also adopt Jaguar's Advanced Restraint Technology System (ARTS) from 2001 XK models. This uses ultrasound occupant-position and crash-impact sensors to trigger dual-stage dashboard and front side airbags. Curtain side airbags are a likely option, perhaps standard on some models. Ditto a radar-based "smart" cruise control similar to Mercedes' Distronic. Also expect an S-Type-style voice-recognition option for controlling climate, audio and navigation functions as well as Internet and e-mail access.

Such wizardry underlines the X350's twin missions of showcasing Jaguar technology while matching or exceeding rivals for luxury, performance, refinement and roadability. The new XJs will be timely. Despite a robust luxury market for most of 2000, Jaguar's big-sedan sales eased 6.3 percent for the calendar 12 months.

Acceleration

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
7 6 8 6.4

Even with the base V8, these 2-ton sedans move with authority, aided by a quick, positive automatic transmission. Supercharged versions are real hot rods. Our test XJR ran 0-60 mph in just 5.7 sec.
Fuel Economy

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
4 4 3 4.3

Test Vanden Plas averaged 15.5 mpg, and XJR averaged 15.6. All require premium fuel.
Ride Quality

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
8 10 7 7.7

Except the XJR, all are cushy and compliant, upset by only the biggest bumps and pavement heaves. Rough rail tracks can induces slight body shudder. Bigger-tired, more firmly damped XJR suffers jittery wheel patter and thump except on unblemished surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
6 6 7 6.1

Steering precise if slightly dull, and must be guided back to center after turns. Mediocre crosswind stability. In corners, XJR stays flat and grippy, but other models show marked body lean before taking a set and powering through.
Quietness

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
9 9 7 7.8

Quiet cats all, with minimal wind and road noise. Some supercharger moan evident at full throttle in models so equipped. Blower fan rather loud except on lowest settings.
Controls

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
3 3 3 5.6

Gauges unobstructed, but some controls not well placed and/or labeled. Odd "J-gate" transmission selector allows manual shifts, but lever action lacks resistance. Available navigation system not that easy to use. Stitched leather and wood creates a clubby British air, but like-priced Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Lexus models are assembled with greater attention to detail.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
5 5 5 7.7

Seats arm-chair comfortable, but low-roof styling means minimal head clearance for 6-footers and compromised positioning for large drivers. Long front footwells feel confining. Center console can't open with cupholders in use.
Room/Comfort (rear)

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
5 7 5 6.9

Head room also tight here, even though seat cushion is too low for comfort. Leg space limited except in long models. Entry/exit demands crouching, again due to low-roof styling. Vanden Plas models have classy fold-down wood writing tables, but no model has rear cupholders.
Cargo Room

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
2 2 2 4.5

Tail styling limits trunk height enough to make cargo volume subpar for the class. At least the hold has a regular shape and low load sill.
Value within Class

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
3 3 3 4.9

Too cozy inside for their bulk outside, but the XJs shine for top-notch ride and refinement, potent, silky V8s, and evergreen British charm. Aging quickly, but under Ford's ownership, poor workmanship and reliability are no longer issues.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
