ACCELERATION

I30 I30t w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 6.1

Rewarding around town and on the freeway, and an easy match for most rivals. Without traction control, though, occasional torque steer: bothersome pulling in hard acceleration. Automatic transmissions can be abrupt in full-throttle "kickdown" shifts.

FUEL ECONOMY

I30 I30t w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 5 4.7

Strictly average for the class, at 20.9 mpg in our test. Infiniti recommends premium fuel.

RIDE QUALITY

I30 I30t w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 5 6.4

Firm but absorbent; I30 falls between the taut Acura TL and the softer Lexus ES 300. I30t tilts more toward TL, but still rides comfortably.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

I30 I30t w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 7 6.3

Fine grip, balance despite marked body lean. The I30t has sharper cornering than base model, but isn't quite sports-sedan agile. Fine stopping power and stability.

QUIETNESS

I30 I30t w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 6 6.7

More than acceptable. Better isolated from all noise sources than TL (and Maxima), not quite as hushed as ES 300.

CONTROLS

I30 I30t w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 7 6.1

Logical and efficient, with large, clearly marked switches and gauges. We find the pedal parking brake less convenient than the pull-up central lever used on many rivals (and Maxima).

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

I30 I30t w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 7

Ample adult-size leg and head space. Comfortable, supportive seats. Driving position sound, easily tailored. Good visibility. Faux-wood trim at odds with otherwise classy cabin.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

I30 I30t w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 5 5.1

Head clearance tight if you're over 5-ft-10, but seat cushion nicely shaped and padded.

CARGO ROOM

I30 I30t w/nav. sys. Class Average
4 4 4

Standard split-fold rear seatbacks augment a large trunk, but trunklid hinges steal space and can crunch cargo.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

I30 I30t w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 4.7

Heated seats and traction control should be standard, but I30 offers fine performance, comfort, and workmanship at reasonable prices. A sound near-luxury buy, with Infiniti's strong customer satisfaction record a bonus.
