ACCELERATION
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5.7 |
Slower than many rivals, but entertaining with manual transmission. Optional automatic makes Tiburon feel far less lively, but performance is adequate for city driving.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.1 |
Averaged 25 mpg with automatic transmission in an even city/highway driving test. Tiburon uses regular fuel.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 3.5 |
Damping is fairly stiff, so large, sharp bumps can jolt; smaller disturbances are absorbed acceptably well.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 6.8 |
Minimal body lean, decent grip, and firm, responsive steering add up to capable road manners. Complementing that, brakes make fairly short, undramatic emergency stops and are easily modulated.
QUIETNESS
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 3.2 |
Engine and road noise are high at most speeds, despite 2001's fortifications.
CONTROLS
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.6 |
Visually interesting and mostly functional, though some switches are oddly shaped and not intuitive. Our last test car's limp, imprecise manual shifter was at odds with Tiburon's sporty pretensions.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 4.3 |
Comfortable, but head and leg room are limited for those over 6-feet tall. Visibility hampered by thick pillars, shallow door windows, and small rear side windows, plus low-slung seat positioning that also complicates entry/exit.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 1.5 |
Not much of either, even for tykes, and entry/exit demands cat-like flexibility.
CARGO ROOM
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 3 |
Liftover is high, but hatchback design and standard split-fold rear seat make Tiburon more practical than some small coupes.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base, man. | Base, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 4.6 |
Tiburon is attractively priced and backed by a long warranty, but the Honda Civic coupe and Ford Focus ZX3 are far superior in most respects and have higher resale values.
