2001 Hyundai Accent Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2001 Hyundai Accent Review
This smaller of Hyundai's two subcompacts is among the few mainstream passenger cars that does not offer ABS, though the base-level L model now has standard power brakes like other Accents. The L hatchback uses a 92-hp 1.5-liter 4-cyl engine. The uplevel GS hatchback and GL sedan have a 105-hp 1.6-liter 4 cyl. Automatic transmission is optional except for the L. This South Korean automaker offers one of the industry's longest warranties: 5-years/60,000-mi. bumper-to-bumper, 10-years/100,000 powertrain.
Competition
A perennial favorite, the Honda Civic, is new and better than ever. We love the wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. New last year was the Ford Focus. Though we loved almost everything about the Focus, we were reluctant to rank it a Best Buy because it was new from the ground up. After a year of living with a ZTS model, we can say that the reliability is good. Focus ranks a notch below Civic in some areas but costs less. Topping the crowded Recommended list are the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys as they are better than the Civic in many ways. However, they are also the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the no-frills Dodge Neon and Toyota Echo, the slightly-upscale Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege. If you are looking for a budget buy, the Hyundai Accent offers a lot for your dollar, however, it's not as refined as more-expensive competitors.
News
Accent was Hyundai's second most popular U.S. offering in 2000, after larger sister Elantra. It sells in modest numbers for an entry-level small car, but the numbers keep climbing. Last year's total of some 67,000 represented a near 62-percent gain from the previous 12-month figure, which itself was almost double the model's 1998 volume.

No major changes are in store for Accent before its scheduled 2004-model redesign. This will also be the basis for the next-generation Rio subcompact at Hyundai-owned Kia. Hard facts are practically non-existent now, but each version will have its own styling, with Accent probably more expressive than Rio, as well as a bit more upscale in features and maybe power.

Acceleration

L, man. Class Average
2 3.7

We haven't tested a 1.6-liter Accent, but the larger engine should improve on our manual-shift L's sluggish 11.2-sec 0-60 mph time. It should also work better with automatic transmission, but any Accent still demands noisy full-throttle operation for passing "sprints."
Fuel Economy

L, man. Class Average
8 6.8

Our test manual-shift L hatchback averaged 29.6 mpg. This year's 1.6-liter versions should do as well, if not slightly better.
Ride Quality

L, man. Class Average
2 3.7

Accent absorbs small bumps reasonably well, but large potholes can be jolting, and ride is jiggly on washboard surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

L, man. Class Average
3 4.2

Low-achiever tires limit grip, but Accent corners with safe front-drive predictability and moderate body lean. It also makes reasonably short simulated panic stops despite minor rear-wheel locking and marked, but not alarming, nosedive.
Quietness

L, man. Class Average
3 3.6

No car in this class is really quiet, but Accent is class-competitive for noise and vibration.
Controls

L, man. Class Average
5 5.5

Simple and straightforward, with clearly marked controls in easy reach. Taller drivers might feel crowded at the wheel, as the seat doesn't have much rearward travel.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

L, man. Class Average
4 4.3

Seats are comfortable and supportive for everyday commuting, but longer trips may prove tiring.
Room/Comfort (rear)

L, man. Class Average
2 3.1

Seat is too narrow for three adults and too flat for good support. Not enough leg and head room for anyone over 6-feet tall. Entry/exit just OK in the sedan, a pinch in hatchbacks.
Cargo Room

L, man. Class Average
5 3.3

Not vast, but comparable to that of most rivals. Sedans are limited by a short, narrow trunklid.
Value within Class

L, man. Class Average
2 4.6

Makes sense as a budget-priced commuter car that seems well made and boasts a generous warranty. Remember, though, Hyundai lags most every non-Korean brand in resale values--and most rivals offer better performance and refinement than Accent for little more money.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

Manufacturers may periodically offer additional coverage as a purchase incentive. There offers are not reflected on this chart. The federal government requires two other warranties. The Exhaust Emission Warranty covers corrosion-related parts for 2 years/24,000 miles, plus 8 years/80,000 miles on the catalytic converter and any on-board diagnostic device. The Passenger Restraint Warranty covers seat belts and airbags for 5 years/50,000 miles.
