ACCELERATION
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 3.7 |
We haven't tested a 1.6-liter Accent, but the larger engine should improve on our manual-shift L's sluggish 11.2-sec 0-60 mph time. It should also work better with automatic transmission, but any Accent still demands noisy full-throttle operation for passing "sprints."
FUEL ECONOMY
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 6.8 |
Our test manual-shift L hatchback averaged 29.6 mpg. This year's 1.6-liter versions should do as well, if not slightly better.
RIDE QUALITY
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 3.7 |
Accent absorbs small bumps reasonably well, but large potholes can be jolting, and ride is jiggly on washboard surfaces.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 4.2 |
Low-achiever tires limit grip, but Accent corners with safe front-drive predictability and moderate body lean. It also makes reasonably short simulated panic stops despite minor rear-wheel locking and marked, but not alarming, nosedive.
QUIETNESS
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 3.6 |
No car in this class is really quiet, but Accent is class-competitive for noise and vibration.
CONTROLS
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.5 |
Simple and straightforward, with clearly marked controls in easy reach. Taller drivers might feel crowded at the wheel, as the seat doesn't have much rearward travel.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 4.3 |
Seats are comfortable and supportive for everyday commuting, but longer trips may prove tiring.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 3.1 |
Seat is too narrow for three adults and too flat for good support. Not enough leg and head room for anyone over 6-feet tall. Entry/exit just OK in the sedan, a pinch in hatchbacks.
CARGO ROOM
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 3.3 |
Not vast, but comparable to that of most rivals. Sedans are limited by a short, narrow trunklid.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| L, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 4.6 |
Makes sense as a budget-priced commuter car that seems well made and boasts a generous warranty. Remember, though, Hyundai lags most every non-Korean brand in resale values--and most rivals offer better performance and refinement than Accent for little more money.
