ACCELERATION
| Base, auto. | SH, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.7 |
Lively with either transmission. We clocked 0-60 mph at about 8 sec. with automatic, just over 7 with manual.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base, auto. | SH, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.1 |
Our test cars have averaged in the low-20s, which isn't bad for the acceleration. Premium fuel is required.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base, auto. | SH, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 3.5 |
Supple, considering this car's handling prowess, but uneven surfaces induce marked jiggle and occupants feel most bumps.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base, auto. | SH, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 8 | 6.8 |
Grippy, stable, go-kart sharp, with little body lean. Traction control isn't available, and ATTS is no substitute, though it does help keep the SH on course in hard cornering. Braking swift, arrow-straight, and mostly free of unwanted nosedive.
QUIETNESS
| Base, auto. | SH, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 3.2 |
Low engine and wind ruckus at moderate speeds, but tire slap and roar are ever present. Hard acceleration induces a racy but not intrusive engine note.
CONTROLS
| Base, auto. | SH, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 5.6 |
Clear and convenient, though climate system uses old-fashioned sliders instead of more easily adjusted rotary knobs. Honda's usual thorough interior finish, but decor is more economy car than suave sports coupe.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base, auto. | SH, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 4.3 |
Ample leg space, but scant head clearance for 6-footers. Seats hug well, but are "bathtub" low, which hampers entry/exit but not driver visibility.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base, auto. | SH, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 1.5 |
Cramped even for kids, and entry/exit is a lot more difficult than to the front.
CARGO ROOM
| Base, auto. | SH, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 3 |
Modest-size trunk is further limited by a small opening. The rear seatback folds for extra space and locks for security, but isn't split for versatility.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base, auto. | SH, man. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 4.6 |
Sophisticated engineering, polished road manners, and high quality make Prelude one of the best small coupes, but it's not bargain-priced even though sales keep on sliding.
