ACCELERATION
| LX 2WD, auto. | EX-L 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.6 |
Fairly spirited. A test Rodeo ran 0-60 mph in 9.3 secs. and showed good passing power. The automatic transmission is smooth and mostly alert, but hesitates to make full-throttle downshifts from mid-range speeds.
FUEL ECONOMY
| LX 2WD, auto. | EX-L 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 3.7 |
Typical of 6-cyl midsize SUVs, and mediocre at 14.5-15.8 mpg overall for our most recent test models.
RIDE QUALITY
| LX 2WD, auto. | EX-L 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 3.8 |
Decent but trucky. Choppy on rough surfaces, jittery on washboard freeways, harsh over potholes and sharp bumps.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| LX 2WD, auto. | EX-L 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 3.7 |
Agile enough, but mid-pack for a midsize SUV, with plenty of body lean and early tire squeal in tight turns. Lack of dry-pavement 4-wheeling ability is a deficit versus many rivals. Good brakes, but average for power and stopping distance.
QUIETNESS
| LX 2WD, auto. | EX-L 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 3.7 |
Engine relaxed enough in gentle cruising but fairly noisy at full throttle. Tire thrum noticeable too, as is wind rush at highway speeds.
CONTROLS
| LX 2WD, auto. | EX-L 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.8 |
Climate and audio controls a bit distant for some drivers, and vision cluttered directly aft on models with outside spare tire. OK otherwise.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| LX 2WD, auto. | EX-L 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.9 |
Comfortably firm seats don't go back quite enough for long-legged occupants, which can also crowd drivers. Generous head room. Step-in slightly lower than class norm.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| LX 2WD, auto. | EX-L 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.4 |
Little underseat toe space, but decent leg room and, again, ample head room. Narrow rear door bottoms make entry/exit more of a squeeze than it should be.
CARGO ROOM
| LX 2WD, auto. | EX-L 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 7.5 |
Again, typical midsize SUV. Glass liftgate must be opened before the side-opening tailgate, which won't close without freeing a safety catch--all pretty clumsy if your arms are full.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| LX 2WD, auto. | EX-L 4WD | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 4.2 |
Like Rodeo, a strong, competent, slightly sporty mainstream SUV, but a bit pricey, not special in any way, and subpar for refinement and 4WD versatility. Not a bad choice, but the competition offers better ones.
