Vehicle Highlights
Similar to Chevrolet Express. Passenger models and cargo versions offered. Half-ton G1500 comes only in regular length; 3/4-ton G2500 and one-ton G3500 come in regular or extended length. All models have two swing-open cargo doors and, on the passenger side, either 60/40 doors or a sliding door. Regular-length Passenger Vans seat 8-12 people, extendeds carry 12-15. Front seats are buckets; others are benches, which can be removed. Cargo models have two front bucket seats along with metal side and rear panels in place of windows. A 4.3-liter V6 and automatic transmission are standard. V8s of 5.0-, 5.7-, and 8.1-liters are optional; the last is new this year, replacing a 7.4-liter unit. A 6.5-liter turbodiesel V8 is optional starting with G2500 series. Four-wheel ABS is standard; no side airbags are offered. Options include 6-disc in-dash CD changer and a video package with two flip-down monitors. Savana's performance and accommodations mirror those of Chevrolet's Express.
COMPETITION
Though it's nearly a toss up among the Chevrolet Express, Ford Econoline, and GMC Savana, we have selected the Ford as our Best Buy. It offers just a bit more drivability and creature comforts.
